Background

Luo Yan came from an ordinary family. His parents died early, leaving his sister to raise him. He attended vocational school because he valued learning for its own sake, believing that “knowledge can change one’s destiny.” 3 5

His obsession with reading led to his imprisonment: he exploited a loophole in the Emperor Penguin Group’s network to obtain two million book coins for its e-book platform, receiving a twenty-year sentence. 5

Upon reaching Sin Prison Island, Luo Yan immediately gathered the Han prisoners into a group of roughly sixty. He assessed the beach as the safest initial camp, delegated tasks, and put Gaoxin in charge of fishing. 3 During the ensuing conflict, Tianshe severed one of Luo Yan’s arms; Gaoxin bandaged the wound while Luo Yan lay near death. 4 5
