Background

Su Yuqing is the Eldest Princess of Great Qian and the daughter of Emperor Jingtai. In childhood, she was deeply favored by her father and received the title Princess Taiping, reflecting his hope for peace across the realm. She later came to suspect that the change in his conduct—including arranging her marriage into Northern Liang—began after he was possessed by the Martial Ancestor. 280

Thirty years before the events in Qingwu County, Su Yuqing became a Martial Arts Grandmaster at age twenty-eight. Around twenty years before her return to Qingwu County, she traveled from the capital to Nanyang Prefecture and took charge of its affairs, maintaining regional stability against the Longevity Cult and other threats. 123 176

Her agreement with Emperor Jingtai was that she could avoid a political marriage alliance with Northern Liang if she succeeded in reducing the King of Huainan's enfeoffment. The expiration of Great Qian's Centennial Agreement with Great Yin Mountain became the final deadline for this goal. 199

While operating in Qingwu County, Su Yuqing concealed her identity as Teacher Su, a male-presenting instructor at the County Martial Arts Hall. Her lectures stressed that the world belongs to its people rather than solely to its ruler, and she allowed students to discuss politically dangerous questions openly. 122 124

Yuhe was Su Yuqing's longtime attendant and agent. Su Yuqing arranged for Yuhe to enter Xie An's service after Yuhe suspected that the Immortal Treasure was in his possession, using her as part of the broader investigation into Great Yin Mountain and the Corpse Refining Hall. 132

Appearance

Su Yuqing is a tall, slender woman with an exceptionally refined and noble bearing. Her cultivation preserves her youth; even when nearly sixty, she appears to be around twenty. 170 204

  • Often disguises herself as a male scholar or teacher in a long robe. 124 133
  • In formal women's attire, she wears fitted silk jackets and flowing silk skirts in blue or purple tones, with a narrow waist emphasized by a sash. 136 170 256
  • Has an exquisite, aristocratic face and a serene, composed demeanor. 170
  • After Reverse Transformation, her appearance remains recognizably hers but becomes more ethereal, with “ice-like skin and jade-like bones.” 235
  • Is resistant to heat and cold. 170

Personality

Su Yuqing is composed, courteous, and deliberate even when confronting subordinates, enemies, or dangerous political matters. She speaks respectfully to students and is willing to discuss ideas that challenge Great Qian's strict hierarchy. Her stated belief is that the realm belongs to the people. 122

She is deeply protective of civilians and consistently frames her political ambitions around preventing war, reducing suffering, and protecting the talented people of Great Qian. She seeks evidence before acting against the King of Huainan because an early resolution could avert a wider conflict. 192 199 231

Despite her outward calm, Su Yuqing is ambitious and unwilling to remain merely a tool of the imperial family. She seeks to eliminate the Five Elder Demons, open a southeastern trade port, stabilize the southern prefectures, and forge her own path beyond the limits imposed by her birth. 170 234

Her commitment to martial arts is equally uncompromising. Although she learns of a safer route to immortal cultivation through the wizard's blessing method, she chooses Reverse Transformation to honor more than sixty years spent pursuing the peak of martial arts. 233
