Background / History

Su Wuming was born into a small martial arts family under a cloud of misfortune. His mother died giving birth to him; his father was later killed while pursuing a criminal; and demons eventually destroyed the rest of his family. The Demon Extermination Division took in the sole survivor. 101

His extraordinary talent was repeatedly undermined by inexplicable disasters. He suffered qi deviation while opening his meridians with a demonic art, encountered further deviations even after changing to peaceful Daoist methods, broke bones during body tempering, nearly ruined his meridians during another refinement, and was once mistakenly given poison pills instead of breakthrough medicine. 101

These incidents led both Su and other Black Armored Guards to believe that his bad luck endangered people around him. The Division ultimately assigned him solo missions, while Su withdrew from most social contact to avoid implicating others. Even so, he continued cultivating, accepted every mission assigned to him, and became known for always taking the most dangerous position in battle. 101 108 138

His first major partnership with Han Zheng began at Desolate City, where Han disregarded the rumors around him and proposed they investigate a Great Demon together. Han later saved Su from Scorpion Charm Lady’s venom, after which Su considered his life owed to Han. 108 110

His isolation began as a deliberate attempt to protect others from the misfortune associated with him, and years of being avoided by fellow guards reinforced his quiet, detached manner. He rarely speaks unless directly addressed, but is highly perceptive of others’ hostility, wariness, and sincerity. 138 309

He refuses to accept that misfortune defines his life. Rather than retreating from cultivation or demon-slaying missions, he treats every setback as another obstacle to overcome. His principles are simple: demons killed his family, the Demon Extermination Division saved him, and debts—whether to the Division or to Han Zheng—must be repaid regardless of personal risk. 108 110

In combat, Su is calm rather than reckless. He deliberately adopts a desperate, all-or-nothing approach because he believes prolonged fights invite the accidents that have followed him throughout life. 110
