Background

The Abyss is the chaotic outer domain beneath the present world and the physical shell of Tartarus, one of the Primordial Gods. It was formed from the remnants of creation and is described as the source of all Chaos. Early on, Tartarus appeared to have abandoned the pursuit of self-awareness; this preserved its Great Divine Power but left it ruled by chaotic instinct rather than a complete mind 9 121.

At its core, the Abyss contains scattered remnants of primordial Source Power and pure Order expelled from the present world’s laws. Ryan discovered that this rejected Order could be assimilated by an Abyss-native entity to establish an Interface and a reciprocal connection with Tartarus 121 123.

Cronus sought to exploit this principle after learning that another being had already occupied the position of the first Abyss God. He instead planned to establish a Nine-Layered world using Abyss power, accepting that his new world and Tartarus would become natural enemies capable of devouring one another 121 124. This division ultimately produced the enduring opposition between the Abyss and the Nine Hells 133 169.

Although initially treated as instinctual, Tartarus has demonstrated selective agency. It directly barred Gaia from entering when she tried to merge with it and create an opponent to Zeus, an outcome Ryan had not expected 247. Later observers concluded that the force within the Abyss possessed at least some degree of wisdom and had made arrangements in the Mortal Realm 470.

Structure and Laws

The Abyss has no fixed form or material stability. Its Rules are chaotic: directions, causality, and ordinary understanding may be inverted at its boundary with the Underworld 121. Deeper within, void, chaotic Space-Time, distorted writing, and residual Source Power replace conventional landscapes 121 124.

• Tartarus contains an unknowable number of layered Interfaces. Thousands existed after the awakening of the Mother of Demons, and their number continued growing too quickly for even Hell’s rulers to measure 255 530.
• Entrants may be scattered randomly across an Interface. Upon arrival in the Myriad Abyss Plains, outsiders instinctively learn the Interface’s name and basic information 550.
• The Abyss generally accepts outsiders who lack present-world Divinity, while True Gods and Great Divine Power beings face stronger rejection or suppression 337 552.
• Its will grants Lord Marks and Interface blessings. A Lord can command an Interface’s power, but its authority remains borrowed from Tartarus rather than equal to the God King’s Throne 551 570.
• Most Demon Lords can occupy only one Interface unless their bloodline and attributes support additional Layers. Conquering Purgatory and earning merit for the Abyss are means of increasing their standing 562.
• Failed attempts by Demons to ascend into Demon Gods do not go to waste: their deaths help Tartarus wear down conflicting foreign Source Powers and strengthen its overall structure 552.

Native Life

The Abyss produces Demons through unstable bloodline systems rather than the inherited God Blood of the Mortal Realm. A Demon’s bloodline changes its body, race, abilities, and potential as it sublimates, allowing some to rise from ordinary life to Demigod or Demon God status 551 552.

This path is highly dangerous. Demons seeking promotion absorb contradictory Chaotic Source Powers, often foreign remnants that Khaos could not digest. Successful ascension can create a new Demon God and an associated race; failure destroys the aspirant and feeds the Abyss instead 552.

Mother of Demons and Demon Gods

Moya, formerly Mnemosyne, became the first fully conscious life of the Abyss after being assimilated by Tartarus. As the Mother of Demons, she is immortal and temporarily halted the awakening of the first six Demon Gods while she slept 124 255 256.

The first-generation Demon Gods embody aspects of the Abyss’s Rules and are protected by its will when threatened by superior power. Their deaths and destruction during the war with Hell nevertheless helped create new life and new Interfaces within Tartarus 278 279.

History

Creation of the Nine Hells

Cronus’s attempt to claim power from Tartarus established the basis for a separate Nine-Layered world. Its power originated from the Abyss, creating a reciprocal devouring relationship: the new world could grow by taking from Tartarus, while the Abyss could eventually attempt to reclaim it 124 133.

The resulting Nine Hells became “Order in Chaos,” fundamentally linked to the Abyss despite their hostility. Neither side can achieve a quick victory, because true victory requires the complete devouring of the other world 169 277.

Awakening of Moya

The shifting Underworld and the actions of other Primordial Gods stirred Tartarus, which in turn awakened Moya after an Era-long slumber. Once her memories returned, she recognized her transformation from Titan Goddess to Mother of Demons and prepared the Demon Gods to attack the Material Realm 255 256.

Tartarus lent Moya limited authority over its power. Within the Abyss, she could disturb Space-Time, identify hostile intrusions, and command forces capable of challenging the Nine Hells 258 275 276.

War with Hell and the Asura Field

When Moya and the Demon Gods moved against the Nine Hells, Tartarus exerted immense pressure directly upon Hell’s Interfaces. Hell could not afford a prolonged defensive war, as the Abyss’s vast scale allowed it to suffer far greater losses 277.

The conflict led to the birth of the Asura Field, a new Interface connected to both worlds. Demon God remnants escaping Hell became new Abyss life, beginning another cycle of creation and destruction inside Tartarus 278 279.

Expansion through Foreign-Domain Remains

As Khaos consumed foreign worlds, it sent difficult-to-digest remains, corpses, and conflicting powers into Tartarus. The Abyss processed these remnants through Interface growth, Demon bloodline mutation, and failed ascensions, causing its strength to increase rather than diminish despite Hell’s extraction of its power 530 552.

The absorption of foreign remnants also accelerated the creation of new Layers and Demon Gods, making the Abyss increasingly diverse and difficult for outsiders to understand 530 556.

Zeus’s Expedition

Zeus entered the Abyss through a Flesh Avatar to investigate its growth, locate the Great Serpent, and seek a way to borrow Tartarus’s power. He found the Abyss markedly stronger than during his previous visit: its “Sky” had risen, its “Earth” had thickened, and its Chaos Rules had intensified 533 550.

During this expedition, Zeus cooperated with the Five-Colored Dragon Mother, who used Lord authority to navigate the Myriad Abyss Plains and later became an Abyss Lord herself 551 559. Zeus also repaired part of the Thunder Pool, inadvertently increasing the Demon Prince’s potential and receiving enough Abyss power to establish one-way communication with his True Form 569 570.

Zeus’s meeting with Moya caused the laws of the Abyss and Mortal Realm to converge. Tartarus responded by bestowing favor upon several entities, including Aphrodite, the Demon Prince, and the Eight-Armed Snake Demon, before beginning its attempted Sublimation toward Chaos 571 573 574.
