Background / History

Heracles was born to Alcmene and Zeus. Hera’s interference delayed his birth, after which Alcmene abandoned him in a field. Hera encountered the infant and nursed him; her divine milk contributed to his extraordinary constitution, while his brief connection to her gave him the name “Heracles,” or “Hera’s Glory.” He strangled venomous snakes shortly after birth. 360 427

His strength grew unpredictably throughout childhood. He accidentally injured a servant, damaged furniture and books, and later killed a writing teacher while retaliating against a violent beating. Though judged to have acted in self-defense, he was sent to tend sheep in the Cithaeron Mountains because he could not reliably control his power. 408

Zeus viewed Heracles as both an exceptionally promising son and a tool. After Alcmene’s death, Zeus intended to drive him toward legendary accomplishments and use him to uncover secrets held by other gods.
