Background

Jann succeeded his father as Duke of South Bank after the elder Cavendish was assassinated. The official account held that Jann's uncle, Viscount Sona Cavendish, arranged the murder and died in prison after the plot was exposed. Jann later disclosed that Bolwin, the supposed assassin, had been indebted to Sona and accepted blame; the actual killer was known only as the Back Curved Blade.
