Background / History

Wangcai was living with Song Ren during a month-long break between missions. Usually taking the form of a slightly oversized, chubby cat, he watched films and television to help Song Ren review mission-world plots. He rapidly adapted to modern life, ordered takeout with his own phone, worked online as the commentator “Hu Hu Shuo,” and took game-boosting jobs. 412

During the Pingshan Ancient Tomb mission, Song Ren sent Wangcai ahead to scout the region. Within just over two days, Wangcai had protected several mountain folk and gained their worship as the stronghold’s tiger totem god, giving Song Ren’s expedition a crucial local connection. 426 431

When Xieling forces attempted to seize Song Ren’s party at Zangguan Yi Zhuang, Wangcai immediately retaliated against Luo Laowai. After being shot in the forehead, he transformed into a half-man, half-tiger form, killed Luo Laowai, and had to be calmed by Song Ren’s “old rules.” 432 433

Wangcai later accompanied Song Ren through several supernatural missions, fought beside ikun and Xiong Da against a Flying Jiangshi, and served as an escort for Zhuge Wolong. 476 477 509

He is proud of his place as a servant rather than a mere mount, looks down on less-disciplined demons, and can be comically sensitive about his status. 471 He is also highly adaptable: despite being a centuries-old tiger demon, he enthusiastically embraced modern entertainment, online work, and gaming. 412
