"Your Majesty, the two Intermediate Wizards have confessed!" said the intelligence officer who had come to report in the Council Hall of Abel's temporary palace, located in the former royal palace of the Keen Duchy.
It had taken only one night to break the two Intermediate Wizards. They and the other two archers were all members of the Assassin Guild, the largest assassin organization on the Holy Continent.
Whether knights, warriors, or wizards, some people would need financial or resource support for various reasons. This was especially true for wizards. They could not openly participate in secular affairs. Although the various countries provided them with offerings, those incomes were insufficient to maintain their cultivation and purchase better supplies.
Wizards with inheritances had it somewhat easier. At the very least, their inherited abilities could bring them more cultivation resources. Intermediate Wizard Morton, for example, was skilled at making Rune cards. This allowed him to earn a great deal of wealth for his own cultivation while also supporting his disciples.
Wizards without inheritances were not so fortunate. Cultivation arrays required Magic Stones, Magic Towers needed wealth to maintain, and faster meditation required potions. Without another skill, all these expenses meant that a wizard's combat power became a means of exchange.
The two Intermediate Wizards were like this. They had joined the Assassin Guild, and through their long careers of assassination, had raised their combat power far beyond that of ordinary wizards.
"I don't seem to have offended the Assassin Guild. Why did they target me?" Abel asked in a deep voice.
Under normal circumstances, the Assassin Guild could not take nobles of high status as assassination targets. This was the guarantee that allowed the Assassin Guild to survive on the Holy Continent.
