Background / History

The Hungry Ghost first appears near the Jinlan Mine, where it hides against a cave wall with dry skin, a sunken abdomen, and no visible internal organs. It approaches Yu Ziqing but stops when his rusted short sword releases killing intent perceptible to hungry ghosts. Yu Ziqing recognizes that it has not harmed anyone and spares it, warning that harming others would leave it with no path back. 6

Afterward, the Hungry Ghost secretly helps Yu Ziqing with work in the mushroom forest. Yu leaves food for it without demanding repayment, and the ghost cautiously accepts his kindness. Its actions create a quiet, one-sided friendship based on gratitude rather than spoken conversation. 8

When Yu Ziqing becomes trapped in a cave, the Hungry Ghost digs through the stone to rescue him. Yu is too weak to escape and gives it his last piece of food, asking it to tell the villagers not to search for him. Yu later dies of starvation, and the black qi released from his body gives rise to the King of Hungry Ghosts. 32

The Hungry Ghost is present when other starving ghosts transform into hungry ghosts. It kneels at the front of the group, cradling Yu’s beef jerky and expressing gratitude toward the being that has given the ghosts hope of eating again. 32

Hungry ghosts later become an organized and influential population. They cooperate with humans, defend the Abyss Rift, process demon materials, and serve as a deterrent against mass starvation.
