Background / History

Odin was originally a giant. He persuaded the Primordial Giant Ymir to dissolve into the World Tree Universe, then became estranged from the giant race for doing so. He later sacrificed one of his eyes to obtain the Fruit of Wisdom from the Tree of Wisdom. 521 880

Using the insight gained from the Fruit of Wisdom, Odin chose Midgard as a sacrifice to facilitate his rule over the World Tree. He selected it because its people possessed eternal life and advanced technology but lacked the divine power to resist him. Midgard's destruction removed it from the ten original realms, leaving the nine realms recognized by the Aesir. 462 527

The sacrifice provoked the giants. The Light and Dark Giants used their lives to curse Odin and the Aesir with Ragnarok, while the elemental giants sought to accelerate its arrival. Odin subsequently tried to delay—not eliminate—the foretold end of Asgard. 527 660

In his efforts to suppress Ragnarok, Odin deceived and killed the Mountain Giant Geyir, mother of his eldest daughter Hela. Fearing Hela's inherited Earth-element power and the prophecy surrounding her, he imprisoned her and erased her from Asgardian history. He also acquired or stole the power sources of other giants. 528 656

Appearance

Odin is an elderly-looking, one-eyed man with long white hair and a white beard. He commonly conceals his missing eye beneath an ornate eyepatch, giving him the appearance of a benevolent old king despite his reputation as a conqueror. 521

Behind that image, Odin is calculating, suspicious, and willing to sacrifice relatives, subjects, and entire realms to preserve his dominion. He treated Thor's exile as a means to investigate Earth, used Loki's actions to eliminate Laufey, and considered using the Chitauri invasion and a later “savior” to control Earth's faith. 531 533 639 670

His wisdom is formidable inside the World Tree Universe, but it is tied to the Fruit of Wisdom and the World Tree's support. Outside that setting, his strategic judgment becomes markedly less reliable. 748 786 870

Odin sacrificed Midgard after using its people to construct the Bifrost, gaining the means to consolidate his rule over the World Tree. The giants answered with the curse of Ragnarok, making the destruction of the Aesir inevitable even if Odin could delay it. 536 527

Thor's Exile and Laufey's Death

When Thor's actions in Jotunheim set Ragnarok in motion, Odin stripped him of his divine power and exiled him to Earth. When Heaven demanded Loki's surrender, Odin killed its messenger rather than yield Asgardian authority. Death and Aftermath

Living quietly in Iceland, Odin awaited death and revealed Hela's existence to Thor and Loki. Upon his death, Hela was released, while Odin's essence was claimed by the Real Universe and his soul was deposited in a destroyed parallel universe as part of a larger plan. 908 909
