Background

When the Hell Dimension was connected to Earth, Mephisto possessed complete authority over it. Hell’s later separation from Earth broke that relationship: he remained its highest authority holder, but no longer controlled it absolutely. To compensate, he entered the human world through Hell’s cracks, bargained for souls through contracts, created a faith around himself, and employed collectors such as Ghost Riders. 279

Mephisto was bound from openly invading Earth by the covenant between Hell and Supreme Merlin. He sought to invalidate that restriction by ending the Supreme Merlin lineage, collaborating with the Dark Dimension and planning to harvest mages’ souls for a demon army. 456

His position deteriorated after Lake/Saga devoured Mephisto’s favored son, Black Heart Demon, and seized a share of Hell’s authority. Mephisto’s later projection to Earth was defeated and partially devoured, turning their conflict into an acknowledged struggle for the lordship of Hell. 457 459

Though he repeatedly fought Lake for control of Hell, Mephisto later allied with him against Heaven’s forces and the Chitauri. The agreement promised Mephisto the souls of Heavenly Bird People, the Chitauri insectoid Hell, and protection for his bloodlines—but Lake deliberately signed as “Saga,” rendering the contract binding only on Mephisto. 644 645

Mephisto was eventually killed by Hell itself. Lake later referred to him as his adopted brother and invaded Hell to avenge him. 843 850

Personality

Mephisto is proud, vindictive, and intensely concerned with the appearance of strength. The death of Black Heart Demon, the escape of the Witchcraft Demon, and repeated defeats by Lake each became personal humiliations that he struggled to tolerate. 457 546

He is also calculating and opportunistic. Rather than rely solely on force, he builds power through soul contracts, religious faith, possession, and bargaining. When a direct confrontation is unfavorable, he is willing to negotiate—even offering Lake co-rule over Hell—though he remains suspicious of every agreement. 279 457 644
