Background and History

Zhang Luye heads a family based in the Western Frontier. His father, Zhang Heming, was long believed to have died in the Xifeng Rift. Zhang Luye later became a Martial Immortal, but ranks at the bottom of China’s Martial Immortal circle and resents how its senior members treat him 13 230 331.

A dream he received after becoming a Martial Immortal helped drive the Zhang family’s plan against Gu Jinzhi. When Li Wei—known as Jiang Xue and married to Gu Jinzhi—arrived at the Western Frontier instead, Zhang Luye recognized both her talent and the danger of continuing the feud. He accepted his son Zhang Yansheng’s plan to protect her and ease relations 198 207 213.

Zhang Luye later gave Li Wei the Zhang family’s closely guarded Diamond Body method. He had overlooked its effect on a practitioner’s physique and tried to replace it after Yun Heng pointed this out, but Li Wei had already cultivated it to perfection. He subsequently apologized to her, and their relationship improved 241 243 258.

Appearance

Zhang Luye is a dark-faced, towering, heavily muscled man with short, coarse hair. Yun Heng attributes much of his build to his decades of Diamond Body practice 207 210 243.

• His shoulders are described as broad as a wall, and his hands as large as fans 230.
• He has fierce, tiger-like eyes; by the time Zhang Heming reappears, his hair has turned white 331.

Personality

Zhang Luye is blunt, emotional, and fiercely protective of his family. He scolds his injured grandson for coming to the battlefield, yet worries for him; despite his formidable rank, he frequently defers to Yun Heng and trusts Zhang Yansheng’s judgment on family affairs 207 230. He is also loyal to old friends: he had Zhang Pengcheng accept blame for a scandal to protect the reputation of a friend’s family 316.

His commitment to humanity survives his father’s attempt to draw him to the Abyss. Even as their battle consumes his life, Zhang Luye refuses to join him and shields Li Wei from his attack 331 337.

Abilities & Skills

Diamond Body and Diamond Mountain Breaker

Zhang Luye reached Great Accomplishment in the Zhang family’s body-refining method, Diamond Body, before becoming a Martial Immortal. He did not attain its perfection stage 243.

• Diamond Mountain Breaker produces a temporary surge of golden, then blood-red flames and raises his combat output to peak Fifth Stage 332.
• The technique burns through his vitality and leaves his body severely withered during his fight with Zhang Heming 337.

Saber Combat

• Zhang Luye uses a large saber. His blood-red saber strike clashes with Zhang Heming’s attack on a scale that disrupts battles high above the ground 315 336.
• He drives Zhang Heming back at first, but cannot sustain the advantage against the Sixth Stage fighter 336 337.

Relationships

• Zhang Heming — father. Believed dead for thirty years; his return as an Abyss defector leads to a devastating fight between them 331 332 337.
• Zhang Yansheng — second son and a Grandmaster. Zhang Luye relies on his strategic judgment despite their disagreements 13 207.
• Zhang Pengcheng — grandson. Zhang Luye is protective of him but sharply disapproves of his pursuit of the married Li Wei 207.
• Yun Heng — senior Martial Immortal whom Zhang Luye calls “Uncle Yun.” Yun Heng teases and directs him, but also helps him reconcile with Li Wei 198 230 258.
• Li Wei / Jiang Xue — initially caught in the Zhang–Gu family feud; she accepts his gift and apology. Zhang Luye later risks his life to protect her 241 258 337.
