Arc 3The Fire Spirit and the Orc War

Zhang Yang helped Wu Yuan survive the Hero’s Trial, killed the Fire Spirit and Fire Crow, then returned to strengthen his village for war with the Orc Tribe. The arc left him weighing a costly offer of help from the Great King’s Black Fox.

  • Zhang Yang entered the Hero’s Trial with Wu Yuan, who became chief of the Guada Tribe, and helped him prepare for a sand serpent while experimenting with fire magic.
  • Zhang Yang’s trial escalated after mammoths destroyed much of the Guada Tribe, and Wu Yuan’s choices triggered a mission to seal the Fire Spirit before the volcano erupted.
  • Zhang Yang helped Wu Yuan kill the Sabertooth Tiger King, promoted him to the King of Spearmen Template, and gained Zhao Xuanling’s quest to save the Tiger Tribe’s territory.
  • Zhang Yang and Wu Yuan confronted the Fire Crow and Fire Spirit at the volcano, and Zhang Yang killed both before the trial returned them to the village.
  • Zhang Yang upgraded Qin Yidao, Liu Dali, and Sun Goudan as Kings of Archers, recruited and organized villagers, and prepared specialized weapons and troops for a fight with the Orc Tribe.
  • Zhang Yang adjusted his training plans after discovering that many ordinary recruits could flee when morale dropped, while Qin Ge described the advantages of elite troop types.
  • The Black Fox offered Zhang Yang the Great King’s help against the Orc Haru Tribe for ten white-quality Fragments of Hope, but refused his counteroffer and said its group would remain neutral if he declined.
Chapters 51–75 Vol. 1 Read

Ch. 51Hero's Trial

Zhang Yang activated Wu Yuan’s Hero’s Trial at Terror difficulty, then found himself transported without his equipment to a caveman tribe. He planned to blend in, find Wu Yuan, and make weapons before helping the prospective hero kill the required beasts within fifteen days.

  • Zhang Yang selected Mu Shaojun as his village chief successor and chose Terror difficulty for the Hero’s Trial.
  • A white light transported Zhang Yang and Wu Yuan away from the village, and Zhang Yang woke in a dark cave among sleeping cavemen without his weapons or armor.
  • Zhang Yang checked the trial requirements: he had fifteen days to help the prospective hero kill ten elite ferocious beasts or two rare ones.
  • Zhang Yang confirmed his Soul Force Field still worked and decided to stay inconspicuous until he could find Wu Yuan and craft wooden spears.

Ch. 52The Croods

Zhang Yang survived a morning attack by ferocious beasts alongside the Guada Tribe and discovered that Wu Yuan had become its chief. Wu Yuan revealed that the tribe faced a sand serpent catastrophe in five days, and Zhang Yang recognized the names of nearby tribes from a movie he remembered.

  • The Guada Tribe rushed from its cave and fought off a pack of big cats, while Zhang Yang restrained one with an Imprisonment Spell until the chief killed it.
  • A white light plundered the bound big cat and gave Zhang Yang a Ferocious Beast Puppet instead of a demon soul.
  • Wu Yuan approached Zhang Yang and explained that he had become the Guada Tribe's chief and received three trial missions.
  • Wu Yuan said a rare-grade sand serpent would swallow the tribe in five days, and listed missions to obtain fire and communicate with the Gulu Tribe to exchange for women.
  • Zhang Yang joked about the tribe names and guessed there was a Huaka Tribe nearby, which shocked Wu Yuan because he was right.

Ch. 53Fireballs Need Souls Too

Zhang Yang learned that a rare-grade sand snake would threaten the Guada Tribe in five days and resolved to save the tribe and others to increase his village’s population limit. After making fire and failing to create a fireball from scratch, he devised a plan to compress flames from large bonfires and throw them at the beast.

  • Zhang Yang asked Wu Yuan about weapons and plans for the coming catastrophe, then learned that saving tribespeople could increase the village’s population limit.
  • Zhang Yang urged Wu Yuan to pursue the Gulu Tribe’s female protagonist, but Wu Yuan warned that Brother Gua had killed an adult sand snake with one punch.
  • Zhang Yang abandoned his attempt to polish a stone knife and made fire by rubbing wood together.
  • Zhang Yang used his Soul Force Field to study the flames and tried to reproduce an Orc Mage’s fireball, but the flame went out and consumed much of his Soul Power.
  • Zhang Yang proposed using bonfires as a source of flames, compressing them into fireballs, and hurling them at the sand snake.

Ch. 54Please step out of your cave

Zhang Yang decided to spend the night outside the cave to face the Sand Serpent King, and he broke Wu Yuan free from the Guada Tribe chief’s influence so they could continue Hero’s Trial. As Wu Yuan prepared to defend their group overnight, Zhang Yang studied the Fireball Spell and worked out a plan to create his own version.

  • Zhang Yang told Wu Yuan he would spend the night outside the cave, but Wu Yuan warned him that nocturnal beasts made it dangerous.
  • Zhang Yang challenged Wu Yuan to remember why they had come to this world, then used his Soul Force Field to break the Guada Tribe chief’s influence over him.
  • Wu Yuan sealed the cave with a boulder and forced five Guada Tribe men to help gather stones and trees for their defense.
  • Wu Yuan declared that spearmen never retreated, reassuring Zhang Yang that their group would face the night outside.
  • Zhang Yang analyzed the Fireball Spell’s closed-loop structures and concluded he could use eight mana structures to create a fireball he called Zhang’s Fire Blast.

Ch. 55A Foodie in the Primitive Era

Wu Yuan defended the cave through the night while Zhang Yang experimented with compressed air and fire magic. Zhang Yang successfully created and detonated a fireball, killing a giant beast and providing a midnight snack.

  • Wu Yuan prepared crude wooden spears as the five Guada Tribe warriors feared the dark, while Zhang Yang slept peacefully.
  • Strange creatures approached the cave but stayed away from the bonfires and eventually retreated.
  • Wu Yuan killed three ferocious beasts that attacked when one bonfire burned low, then returned to rest.
  • Zhang Yang compressed air with his Soul Force Field and constructed the Second Closed-Loop Circle, forming a Curved Force Field.
  • Zhang Yang created a fireball and detonated it against a gigantic ferocious beast, killing it and announcing that they had a midnight snack.

Ch. 56The Commander Is Away

Zhang Yang reconsidered what the Hero’s Trial was meant to test and decided Wu Yuan needed to prove himself without his help. He announced he would go into seclusion for thirteen days, leaving Wu Yuan to handle the trial alone.

  • After breakfast, Zhang Yang told Wu Yuan to arm the Guada Tribe’s adult men and prepare to annex the Ehu, Huaka, and Suoluo Tribes.
  • Zhang Yang weighed the limitations of his Fire Blast and struggled to find a reliable way to strengthen it.
  • Watching Wu Yuan train the Guada men led Zhang Yang to suspect that the Hero’s Trial tested leadership and independence as well as combat ability.
  • Zhang Yang told Wu Yuan to abandon his plans and complete the basic trial on his own while Zhang Yang went into seclusion for at least thirteen days.
  • Wu Yuan protested, but Zhang Yang left him and crawled into the cave.

Ch. 57Chopping Wood and Burning Charcoal on South Mountain

Zhang Yang kept his promise not to interfere with Wu Yuan and prepared to test whether charcoal heat could power his magic. His first experiment ended in an explosion after his Curved Force Field sucked in the burning furnace and compressed it into an earthen ball.

  • Zhang Yang cleaned the cave and decided to make charcoal after realizing it might burn hotter than wood and work with his Soul Force Field.
  • Zhang Yang spent two days making about five hundred kilograms of charcoal while refusing to advise Wu Yuan.
  • Wu Yuan left with fifteen Guada Tribe warriors without telling Zhang Yang where they were going, leaving Zhang Yang anxious about the Hero's Trial.
  • Zhang Yang built an earthen furnace, fed it air with his Soul Force Field, and tried to absorb its heat using the Second Closed-Loop Circle.
  • The Curved Force Field pulled the furnace, stones, and glowing charcoal into an earthen ball, which Zhang Yang threw away before it exploded.

Ch. 58Son of the Sun

Zhang Yang met ten men from the Tiger Tribe, who were searching for their Sun’s Son priest, Guy, and learned that the movie’s events were underway. When Guy’s horn call brought a herd of mammoths charging into the Guada Tribe, Zhang Yang and the Tiger Tribe men escaped up a cliff, leaving most of the Guada Tribe dead.

  • Wu Yuan returned with ten men from the Tiger Tribe, who were searching for their Sun’s Son priest, Guy.
  • Zhang Yang recognized Guy as the male protagonist and questioned the Tiger Tribe men about the world’s coming end and the Sun’s Son priest.
  • A mournful horn sounded, and more than a dozen mammoths charged toward the Guada Tribe.
  • Zhang Yang and Wu Yuan fled up a cliff and brought the Tiger Tribe men with them.
  • The mammoths trampled most of the Guada Tribe to death.

Ch. 59Lord's Trial

Zhang Yang captured Tiger Tribe warriors and learned that a fire spirit in their territory controlled an active volcano. He accepted the upgraded Lord's Trial, which required him to seal the spirit within seventy-two hours.

  • Zhang Yang used his Soul Force Field to incapacitate ten Tiger Tribe warriors, confiscated their weapons, and ordered Wu Yuan to bind and question them.
  • Wu Yuan learned that Guy had fled the Tiger Tribe with its divine Conch Horn after the tribal leader sacrificed Guy’s parents to the Son of the Sun.
  • Zhang Yang deduced that the Son of the Sun was a fire spirit associated with the active volcano, and that Guy had stolen a Conch Horn capable of commanding beasts.
  • A hidden plot upgraded the Hero’s Trial to the optional Lord’s Trial, and Zhang Yang questioned the warriors further about Guy’s parents and the flames that killed them.
  • Zhang Yang accepted the trial and received the mission to seal the Low-level Fire Spirit within seventy-two hours or the active volcano would erupt.

Ch. 60Sabertooth Tiger King

Zhang Yang learned how Wu Yuan’s actions triggered a hidden plot involving Guy and the Tiger Tribe. Wu Yuan chose to kill the remaining tribesmen and face the legendary Sabertooth Tiger King, leaving Zhang Yang to support him if the fight went badly.

  • Wu Yuan told Zhang Yang that Guy had given him the optional Life or Death mission to kill ten Tiger Tribe people and survive until morning.
  • Wu Yuan explained that he had captured and released Guy three days earlier, gaining his favor, then later drew the Tiger Tribe people into a confrontation that led Guy to summon a Mammoth Herd.
  • Zhang Yang realized Wu Yuan’s actions had triggered the hidden plot and asked whether Guy’s mission might be a trap.
  • Wu Yuan said Guy had warned that the Tiger Tribe Leader would send an Ancestral Spirit-controlled Sabertooth Tiger King after the killer, and promised a generous reward for defeating it.
  • Wu Yuan chose to kill the remaining eight Tiger Tribe people and challenge the Sabertooth Tiger King, asking Zhang Yang to turn the tide if he lost.

Ch. 61Slaughterous Aura

Wu Yuan built his strength and killing intent while fighting waves of vicious beasts outside the Guada Tribe cave, reaching a level that alarmed Zhang Yang. Zhang Yang stopped Wu Yuan and urged him to abandon the mission against the Sabertooth Tiger King, and Wu Yuan agreed that Guy had used them.

  • Wu Yuan sat outside the Guada Tribe cave, killing vicious beasts drawn by the scent of blood as Zhang Yang prepared inside to intervene if needed.
  • As Wu Yuan slew more beasts, his qi and blood surged and his killing intent sharpened into a force that disrupted enemies and suppressed Zhang Yang.
  • Zhang Yang realized Wu Yuan was still no match for the legendary-grade Sabertooth Tiger King and decided they had to flee.
  • Zhang Yang entered Wu Yuan's killing-intent field, broke through it with his Soul Force Field, and cast an Imprisonment Spell before rushing to knock Wu Yuan unconscious.
  • Wu Yuan turned and stopped his spear just short of Zhang Yang's throat, then listened as Zhang Yang urged him to abandon the mission and leave the four Guada tribesmen as bait.
  • Wu Yuan accepted Zhang Yang's warning, blamed himself for the situation, and thanked him for saving his life again.

Ch. 62Backspin Spear

Zhang Yang prepared to face the Sabertooth Tiger King again by strengthening his magic and crafting Wu Yuan a better weapon. He discovered a way to nourish ironwood into extraordinarily hard material, but Wu Yuan could not cut it into a spear.

  • Zhang Yang decided to kill the Sabertooth Tiger King before going after the tiger tribe and outlined preparations for the fight.
  • Zhang Yang examined fierce-beast blood, found no Demonic Energy in it, and concluded that beasts relied on physical strength rather than magic.
  • Wu Yuan explained how a melee fighter's strength empowered weapons and warned Zhang Yang that the Killing Aura Field inherently disadvantaged him at close range.
  • Zhang Yang focused his Soul Force Field on an ironwood tree throughout the day, using the leaves' energy to restore some of his Soul Power as he concentrated the trunk's fibers.
  • Zhang Yang uncovered a dark-jade trunk harder than Wu Yuan's captain-grade spear, but Wu Yuan could not cut it to shape a weapon.

Ch. 63Flame Tattoo

Zhang Yang forged a powerful spear for Wu Yuan and tracked Guy to the Gulu Tribe, where he bargained for information about the Sabertooth Tiger King and the Son of the Sun. Guy revealed why he had fled his tribe but withheld the method for making the Son of the Sun sleep, leaving Zhang Yang to pursue the tiger while keeping an eye on Guy’s Flame Tattoo.

  • Zhang Yang made the heavy, armor-piercing Hero's Spear and gave it to Wu Yuan for their coming fight with the Sabertooth Tiger King.
  • Zhang Yang reasoned that Guy would seek help from the Gulu Tribe and led Wu Yuan to its territory.
  • Wu Yuan climbed the cliff, found Guy hiding there, and brought him down to Zhang Yang.
  • Zhang Yang threatened Guy and learned that his parents had taught him several languages, then demanded information about the Son of the Sun.
  • Guy explained that the Son of the Sun had become violent, that his parents had failed to make it sleep, and that he had fled after being chosen as its priest.
  • Guy refused to reveal how to make the Son of the Sun sleep until after the Sabertooth Tiger King was killed, and Zhang Yang noticed the Flame Tattoo on his body.

Ch. 64Forced Kill

Zhang Yang and Wu Yuan lured the Sabertooth Tiger King into a deadly fight, where Wu Yuan killed it with a life-for-life spear attack and suffered grievous wounds. Zhang Yang began Wu Yuan’s promotion, chose the King of Spearmen Template, and watched white light envelop him as his injuries healed.

  • Zhang Yang and Wu Yuan waited for the Sabertooth Tiger King to approach the bait Guy had prepared, while Zhang Yang stayed back as Wu Yuan confronted the beast.
  • Wu Yuan charged with the Hero's Spear and killed the Sabertooth Tiger King, but the clash left him gravely wounded and the spear vanished.
  • Zhang Yang rushed to Wu Yuan, used the Fragment of Hope, and chose to promote him immediately despite the trial-level reward limits.
  • Zhang Yang selected the King of Spearmen Template for Wu Yuan because of his 98% compatibility with it.
  • White light enveloped Wu Yuan and rapidly healed his injuries.

Ch. 65300 Years of the Ancestral Spirit

After Wu Yuan advanced to become a two-star hero, Zhang Yang fused with the 300 portions of Human Ancestral Spirit and discovered that the Tiger Tribe had been founded by another person bound to a Fantasy Village Building Order. He accepted a quest from its first tribal lord, Zhao Xuanling, to prevent a fatal crisis from destroying the Tiger Tribe’s territory.

  • Zhang Yang examined the Human Ancestral Spirit and realized the Tiger Tribe might be another village established through a Fantasy Village Building Order.
  • Zhang Yang learned that the ancestral spirit could strengthen village magic users or increase a village chief’s soul strength and grant a new ability.
  • Zhang Yang examined the Sabertooth Tiger King’s essence but decided not to fuse with it because its legacy could overwhelm him.
  • Wu Yuan completed his advancement, recovered from his injuries, and became immune to Zhang Yang’s Soul Force Field.
  • Zhang Yang fused with the ancestral spirit, doubled his Soul Power, and encountered the spirit of Zhao Xuanling, who recognized him as an ally.
  • Zhang Yang received Zhao Xuanling’s Lord’s Side Quest to eliminate a fatal crisis threatening the Tiger Tribe’s territory.

Ch. 66Another Competitor Appears

Zhang Yang and Wu Yuan reached Tiger Tribe Village to seal its rampaging fire elemental, only to discover that a powerful Fire Crow had taken over as the village’s supposed divine emissary and was burning the settlement. Zhang Yang sent Wu Yuan to distract the crow while he planned to enter the volcanic crater unnoticed.

  • Zhang Yang and Wu Yuan traveled through the night to Tiger Tribe Village, where Zhang Yang sensed that he could absorb pure flame energy.
  • An old Tiger Tribe priest mistook Zhang Yang for a divine emissary and explained that Guy had stolen the artifact used to seal the fire elemental.
  • A huge black crow emerged from the volcano and set the village ablaze with a fireball.
  • The old man revealed that the tribe had accepted the crow as the God of Wisdom’s emissary after it saved their chief a year earlier.
  • Zhang Yang recognized the crow as a rival participant in the trial and told Wu Yuan to draw its attention while he entered the volcanic crater.

Ch. 67The Fire Essence

Zhang Yang gathered fire-attributed mana in the volcano and fought two Fire Crows while Wu Yuan distracted another one. At the bottom of the volcano, Zhang Yang discovered a humanoid Fire Essence that turned to look at him.

  • Wu Yuan drew a Fire Crow away by dodging its fireballs and pelting it with stones while Zhang Yang approached the volcano.
  • Zhang Yang absorbed fire-attributed mana near the volcano's mouth, raising his temporary fire resistance to 27.
  • Zhang Yang descended the stone steps and trapped two Fire Crows with spells, gaining more fire-attributed mana and permanent Fire Resistance +1.
  • Zhang Yang reached the volcano's bottom and saw a beautiful, humanoid Fire Essence playing in the lava.
  • The Fire Essence turned its head and looked toward Zhang Yang.

Ch. 68Return

Zhang Yang lured the fire spirit out of the volcano, trapped it, and hurled it toward the returning Fire Crow, triggering a massive explosion. The Lord's Trial later confirmed that both had been killed, upgraded the mission difficulty, and awarded Zhang Yang rewards before beginning the return countdown.

  • Zhang Yang provoked the fire spirit with the Conch Horn and fled until it chased him out of the volcano's crater.
  • Zhang Yang unleashed his Soul Force Field and True Fire Net Spell to trap the fire spirit, then froze it with Bind.
  • Wu Yuan warned that the Fire Crow was returning, so Zhang Yang absorbed the trapped fire spirit and its cage into the Second Closed-Loop Circle and hurled them toward the crow.
  • A huge explosion shook the volcano and left a hole in its side, while the Fire Crow and fire spirit disappeared.
  • Zhang Yang and Wu Yuan gathered fire-element mana, and the Lord's Trial reported that the Fire Spirit and Fire Crow had been killed, upgraded the mission to Horror-level Difficulty, and issued rewards and a five-second return countdown.

Ch. 69King of Archers

After returning from the Hero's Trial, Zhang Yang prepared his village for the coming war with the Orc Tribe and used three Hero Templates to strengthen its archers. Qin Yidao became a three-star King of Archers, and Zhang Yang assigned him to lead an outward hunting team while Liu Dali and Sun Goudan defended the village.

  • Zhang Yang returned to the village, inspected its defenses and crops, and learned from Wu Yuan that Orc scouts and flying demons had appeared nearby.
  • Wu Yuan recommended Wang Mumu for a defensive Hero Template and Qin Yidao for a ranged-combat template, while Zhang Yang chose Sun Goudan as the third candidate.
  • Wang Mumu gave up his template so an archer could use it, and Zhang Yang assigned templates to Qin Yidao, Liu Dali, and Sun Goudan as Kings of Archers.
  • Qin Yidao's perfect compatibility unlocked a three-star advancement, and all three archers completed their upgrades, with Qin Yidao gaining especially powerful abilities and a ranged-accuracy aura.
  • Zhang Yang appointed Qin Yidao to lead a hunting team with the Four Berserker Bears, assigned Liu Dali and Sun Goudan to defend the village, and ordered Wu Yuan and Zhao Tiezhu to train recruits and make Wolf Fang Arrows.

Ch. 70Elite Population

After resolving the hero candidates, Zhang Yang inspected his trial rewards, recruited elite children, and upgraded a tavern to strengthen the village. He left the village preparing to face the orcs in an open-field battle, with six more Villager Loyalty points needed to unlock three-child births.

  • Zhang Yang recruited one hundred combat recruits and sent them to Qin Ge for training, then recruited five-year-old Wang Yunruo and Zhang Wenyuan as elite children who could potentially become the village chief’s heirs.
  • Zhang Yang decided to seek a higher-quality population through a more difficult Hero’s Trial after defeating the Orc Tribe.
  • Zhang Yang activated the Elementary Tavern near the edge of the Farmland, despite worrying that the orcs might destroy it.
  • Zhang Yang used the Master Artisan's Toolkit to upgrade the tavern to an Intermediate Tavern, reducing his energy to a few hundred points.
  • Zhang Yang’s village reached 74 Villager Loyalty, 225 Prosperity, and a Livability Index of 22.5, leaving it six Loyalty points short of unlocking three-child births.

Ch. 71Secret Weapon

Zhang Yang recruited ordinary villagers and spent the day arranging marriages, producing many children of outstanding quality and one elite boy. After his commanders reported signs of powerful forces nearby, he ordered preparations for an open-field battle against the Orc Tribe and promised to secretly equip his strongest fighters.

  • Zhang Yang recruited 100 women and 100 men, then matched the villagers into couples according to their personalities, with 11 matches ending in disastrous outcomes.
  • Zhang Yang calculated that the couples would have 242 children, including 19 outstanding-quality boys, 16 outstanding-quality girls, and one elite-quality boy.
  • Qin Yidao and Duan Kuan reported that monsters were scarce and that they had sensed a powerful presence while exploring east; Wu Yuan speculated that a stronger village might be nearby.
  • Zhang Yang ordered Wu Yuan and Liu Dali to join the hunting team and gather materials to strengthen 100 soldiers before the war.
  • Zhang Yang announced that the village would fight the Orc Tribe in an open field rather than shelter behind the castle, and said he would secretly craft specialized equipment for Qin Yidao, Liu Dali, and Sun Goudan.

Ch. 72Bow Soul

Zhang Yang secretly nurtured a jade-transformed wood shaft and fashioned it into a crude great bow for Qin Yidao, whose Bow Soul awakened its terrifying power. The chapter ended with Qin Yidao declaring that he could kill a great monster from 500 meters away with the bow.

  • Zhang Yang assigned new villagers to farming, crafts, cooking, guarding, and other work while his soldiers patrolled and hunted for monsters.
  • Zhang Yang brought the Ghost Priest into the forest and spent four days nurturing a massive tree into a jade-transformed wood shaft.
  • Zhang Yang divided the shaft into three bow limbs and returned to the village, where Zhao Tiezhu bound each one with five Captain-grade bowstrings.
  • Wu Yuan and Qin Yidao bent a bow limb to test its strength, and Qin Yidao used his Bow Soul talent to awaken the crude great bow.
  • Qin Yidao's Killing Aura Field overwhelmed those nearby, and he said the bow could let him kill a great monster from 500 meters away.

Ch. 73Three Salted Fish

Qin Yidao explained that the Bow Soul could unleash fifteen devastating shots before its users lost their combat ability, while Zhang Yang prepared the village for a possible attack by the Orc Tribe and other watching factions. The chapter left Zhang Yang planning to inspect the overdue training of one hundred new recruits.

  • Song Dachui challenged Qin Yidao, who explained that he could fire nine Bow Soul-enhanced arrows and that Liu Dali and Sun Goudan could fire three each, at the cost of days of lost combat ability.
  • Zhang Yang assigned Qin Yidao to make and imbue two more longbows, and Qin Yidao requested arrows made from jade-like material without feathers.
  • Wu Yuan reported that the hunting team had collected enough monster souls to upgrade at least eighty Captain-Level Soldiers and described a Black Fox Demon that seemed to be guiding monsters toward them.
  • Wu Yuan warned Zhang Yang that other factions might know about the coming conflict and could exploit a battle between the village and the Orc Tribe.
  • Zhang Yang ordered the hunting team to stop going outside, told Wu Yuan to train the new recruits in throwing, and planned to make more Imprisonment Spears.
  • Zhang Yang learned that the one hundred new recruits had not finished training after five days and decided to visit the Training Ground the next day.

Ch. 74Elite Troops

Zhang Yang discovered that Instructor Qin Ge had secretly trained some recruits as elite Two-Handed Swordsmen, learning their strengths, weaknesses, and advancement path. He ordered 47 recruits to finish regular training while the remaining 40 continued elite training, then learned that elite troops were far less likely to flee than ordinary soldiers.

  • Zhang Yang counted only 87 of the 100 recruits at the Training Ground and confronted Instructor Qin Ge about the missing thirteen.
  • Qin Ge explained that he had changed the training method for promising recruits, killing six deserters and sending seven exhausted recruits back to the Residential Houses.
  • Qin Ge described the Two-Handed Swordsmen's combat abilities, ranged weakness, and advancement into stronger elite troop types.
  • Zhang Yang assigned 40 recruits to continue elite training and ordered the other 47 trained immediately as 30 Longbowmen and 17 Sword and Shield Soldiers.
  • After the 47 recruits became first-tier soldiers, Zhang Yang discovered that ordinary soldiers could flee when their morale fell to 45 or lower.
  • Qin Ge told Zhang Yang that elite troop types rarely deserted, even at low morale, leaving Zhang Yang angry at the instructor's smug smile.

Ch. 75Wild Monsters Gone Mad

Zhang Yang learned how morale worked and redirected his soldiers’ upgrades before meeting a talking Black Fox sent by a Great King to offer help in his coming war with the Orc Haru Tribe. The fox refused to lower its price or fight for Zhang Yang’s lone Fragment of Hope, and Zhang Yang ended the chapter by threatening it.

  • Zhang Yang ordered Wu Yuan to upgrade 30 archers to captain level and the remaining sword and shield soldiers to elite level, then considered how morale affected combat.
  • Duan Kuan reported that a Black Fox from the earlier encounter had returned and wanted to meet Zhang Yang, so Zhang Yang had it brought to the tavern with Wu Yuan.
  • The Black Fox offered the Great King’s help in defeating the Orc Haru Tribe in exchange for ten white-quality Fragments of Hope, with payment allowed within a year.
  • Zhang Yang proposed using his single Fragment of Hope to hire two great monsters to kill Orc soldiers, but the Black Fox rejected the offer and said its price was fixed.
  • The Black Fox revealed it had also offered the Orcs a deal for five Fragments of Hope, but they had offered only one; it said its group would stay neutral if Zhang Yang also refused.
  • Zhang Yang asked whether the fox feared he would kill it.
