Background / History

Qin Liu states that her original name was Liu Qing. While performing a good deed, she was struck by a cement truck, buried underground, and later awakened in a haunted house in the body of a young female ghost. She compares her condition to possession, though she finds the idea of possessing a ghost absurd. 2

For years, she remained alone in the haunted house, driving away visitors to protect both herself and the property. Her confinement is literal as well as emotional: she can only leave the house through Red Jade tokens. 50 180

Her memories and origin remain fractured. She later discovers that the world around her matches the one from her former life, strengthening her hope of finding her sister. Other later accounts depict her as a frightened child who crossed over from another world after losing her memories. 24 484

Qin Liu eventually learns that she once escaped the underworld, placing her in the sights of its Ghost Messengers. She evades Ox-Head and Horse-Face by hiding her scent, then later enters Youdu herself to seek King Yama's help in returning to the human world. 389 392 574

Appearance

Qin Liu appears as an exquisite young woman with a body that is unusually lifelike for a ghost. Her usual clothing is a loose red wedding dress, paired with red embroidered shoes and, at times, a red veil. 2 49

  • Floats rather than walks. 2
  • Has no shadow; moonlight passes through her body. 50
  • Has skin tone and mannerisms closer to a living person than an ordinary ghost. 67
  • Is frequently associated with red clothing, especially her wedding dress and embroidered shoes. 2
  • Later receives a light-blue sailor uniform, cat-ear hair accessories, and white stockings from Liu Haoyu. 72

Personality

Despite her title as a Fierce Ghost, Qin Liu is fundamentally protective rather than malicious. She haunts her mansion to keep it safe, frightens intruders instead of killing them, and worries immediately when Deng Xiaolin faints from one of her scares. 2 26 36

She is easily frightened by stronger supernatural threats and openly argues that ghosts can be afraid of other ghosts. Her fear does not prevent her from helping others; when Liu Haoyu is in danger, she repeatedly follows him into haunted locations despite her reluctance. 43 54 67

Long isolation leaves her playful and childlike when she gains new freedom, particularly when experimenting with Red Jade. Over time, she becomes more cautious, choosing to wait for Liu Haoyu rather than investigate suspicious figures alone. 9 598

Story Role / Major Arcs

Haunting the Mansion

Qin Liu is introduced as the mansion's resident Fierce Ghost. Although she tries to drive Liu Haoyu away through cold, threats, and attempted dream-haunting, his calm response leaves her frustrated rather than dangerous. 2

After Liu Haoyu discovers that she retains her sanity, he warns that the mansion's resentment will eventually turn her into a mindless killer. Qin Liu agrees to cooperate with him, provided that he later helps bring her to Jiangquan City. 27 35 36

The Red Iron Gate Investigation

Her connection to the red gate is suspected, but she herself has no clear understanding of it. 69

Identity, Guide State, and the Underworld

As her memories become increasingly unclear, Qin Liu questions her identity and encounters underworld entities. She develops guide-state abilities, faces the Ghost-faced Elder, and is pursued by Ox-Head and Horse-Face for escaping the underworld. 251 365 389

She later travels to Youdu and bargains with King Yama, offering to work for him for the opportunity to return to the human world. 574
