Background / History

Duan Mu initially possessed only Intermediate Byakurai and relied on it as his principal Kido. His system cannot directly select new spells: a Kido must first be witnessed with its full incantation before it appears as an activation option. Witnessing an incantationless cast does not meet this condition. 3

After activating Healing Kido, Duan Mu began using Kido as both a survival tool and a source of instruction. He founded a “Soul Reaper Cram School,” spending the experience points earned from more than a hundred students on a growing spell repertoire so that he could teach each technique at least to Low-level proficiency. 9 17

Shiba Kūkaku later trained Duan Mu in Spiritual Pressure and Kido theory. She stressed that Kido's advantage over a Zanpakuto user lies in versatility: Binding and Destruction Kido should be combined rather than relying on a single spell as a trump card. 19 20

Duan Mu eventually began researching original spells. His first successful creation, Lightning Rope, arose from a failed attempt to merge Binding Kido #4: Seikaku with Byakurai. Once the system recognized the unfinished prototype, experience-point investment supplied the knowledge needed to complete it. 32

Technical Framework

Spiritual Pressure and mastery

Kido power depends on both the caster's Spiritual Pressure and their understanding of a spell's release method. Among users with equivalent Spiritual Pressure, the caster with superior command of the same Kido produces the stronger result. 20

  • High-numbered Kido require sufficient Spiritual Pressure to be practical; Duan Mu initially could not sustain the demands of high-numbered spells such as Rikujōkōrō. 21
  • Full-incantation high-numbered Kido can alter terrain and are too destructive to demonstrate casually in training. 114
  • Damage to Duan Mu's Core of Spiritual Pressure weakens his casting ability and limits how much Kido he can use. 107
  • Ordinary Healing Kido cannot normally repair severe Core of Spiritual Pressure damage, an injury regarded as nearly incurable even with Soul Society's medical resources. 241

Incantation techniques

  • Canceled Incantation — Allows Kido to be cast without its incantation, but requires substantially higher mastery to retain full power. At Intermediate, it can generally fully release only spells below number ten. 21
  • Post-chanting — Lets a caster complete an incantation after releasing a spell; at the same mastery level, it can bring out the Kido's full power. 21
  • Urahada — A casting method used to release Kido at full power without ordinary timing constraints; Duan Mu used it to deploy multiple Binding Kido against Nnoitra. 160 220
  • Simulated Chant — Complex Spiritual Pressure manipulation that makes a Kido function as though it had been chanted multiple times. Duan Mu used it to create six consecutive Dankū barriers. 160

Destruction Kido

Destruction Kido provides direct offensive force, from lightning and fire to high-order spatial attacks.

  • ByakuraiDuan Mu's first recorded Kido and the basis of much of his later research; its lightning attribute is valued for tearing through targets rather than simply producing raw impact. 1 92
  • Kakka Hō — A fire-based Destruction Kido used against Gen'nai Kura and for controlled incineration of refuse. 57 69
  • Raikōhō — High-numbered lightning Kido used against Ginjo Kugo; Duan Mu considers it among his strongest offensive spells. 21 125
  • Kurohitsugi — Destruction Kido #90. Duan Mu can employ it against powerful opponents, though the rule-maker within his Shikai uses a full incantation because Duan Mu cannot cast it without one. 160 162 199
  • Ichigo Kasō — Destruction Kido #96, advanced by Duan Mu after observing its incantation structure. It is a forbidden sacrificial spell that continuously consumes part of the caster's spiritual body. 216 220 282
  • Thousand-Hand Bright Sky Cannon — Destruction Kido #91, used by Duan Mu against Aizen as multiple dark spheres transformed into light beams. 282

Binding Kido

Binding Kido provides restraint, barriers, concealment, tracking, and battlefield control.

  • Kyokkō — Conceals the caster and supported Duan Mu's ambush tactics against Tsudou and Gen'nai Kura. 57 125
  • Enzansen — A circular defensive shield large enough to protect the caster's full body from broad attacks. 21
  • Grab the Bird's Toes and Chase the Sparrow — Binding Kido #58, an investigative spell that detects Soul Reapers who have not concealed their Spiritual Pressure. Its range and consumption both increase with mastery. 52 91
  • Rikujōkōrō — Binding Kido #61, one of Duan Mu's earliest high-numbered spells and part of his multi-layer restraint against Nnoitra. 21 160
  • Dankū — Binding Kido #81, a barrier particularly effective against Kido-based and rule-adjacent attacks. Duan Mu used repeated barriers and Simulated Chant to withstand a King's Flash. 114 160
  • Kuyō Shibari — Binding Kido #79, used with Kurohitsugi to further restrain Tōsen Kaname. 199

Healing Kido

Healing Kido has no strict numerical system and does not require incantations. It is primarily studied by Fourth Division members, but Duan Mu developed unusually high proficiency in it. 9

  • The system's Healing Kido knowledge includes medicinal-herb knowledge that supports recovery and training. 9
  • Duan Mu combines Healing Kido with medicinal baths and specialized treatment methods to recover from otherwise fatal wounds. 42
  • Fourth Division personnel consider his healing mastery exceptional; he repeatedly maintained a patient with severe Core of Spiritual Pressure damage after Lieutenant Kotetsu Isane judged the case beyond her ability. 96
  • His healing was later described as comparable to, or greater than, Fourth Division Lieutenant Captain Isane's Kido mastery. 114 120

Custom and modified Kido

  • Lightning Rope — A self-created hybrid based on Seikaku and Byakurai. It combines binding ropes with Byakurai's destructive lightning properties. 32 72
  • Modified tracking KidoDuan Mu adapts Binding Kido for tracking and used a modified spell to locate targets, including Urahara Kisuke and Kosuke's abductor. 107 193
  • Modified Earth Wall — During his battle with Barragan, Duan Mu modified a Kido based on Daichi Tenyō to create a material earthen defense that resisted decay longer than Spirit Particle constructs. 214
  • Daichi Fanyong — A Kido created from Shiba Clan techniques, Quincy Spirit Particle Subordination, and Duan Mu's Kido knowledge. Within its range, soil becomes subordinate to Duan Mu's will. 228
  • Fused KidoDuan Mu can fuse unrelated high-level spells by integrating Kurohitsugi's properties into his body through Shunpo, allowing subsequent Kido to inherit its traits. 282

Limitations

  • Kido's greatest strength is breadth of application, but this also makes it experience-intensive: each newly activated spell requires investment, and a large repertoire demands far more experience points than improving a single combat discipline. 17 52
  • A single Kido should not be treated as an all-purpose trump card; Kūkaku specifically warns that doing so sacrifices the versatility that distinguishes a Kido specialist. 20
  • Canceled Incantation does not automatically preserve a spell's full power, especially for intermediate and high-numbered Kido. 21
  • Healing Kido can treat severe wounds, but it does not guarantee recovery from damage to vital spiritual-body structures such as the Core of Spiritual Pressure. 241
