Power Progression

Nature and Formation

• An Asauchi is a standardized, ownerless blade; it becomes a unique Zanpakuto as it adapts to its wielder's soul and swordsmanship. 3 94
• Academy students are temporarily issued Asauchi, while squad members receive them officially after joining the Thirteen Court Guard Squads. 3
• When a Soul Reaper dies, their Asauchi normally returns to its initial state and is buried with the owner's cenotaph. 3

Appearance

Zanpakuto have no fixed appearance. Their sealed forms and manifested spirits change according to their owners, abilities, and development. 94 244

• Initial Asauchi may take forms such as tachi, uchigatana, or wakizashi, selected around the user's sword-wielding habits. 94
• An Asauchi's blade style changes over time to better suit its owner. 94
• Shikai can radically alter a blade's shape; Ikkaku Madarame's Hozukimaru becomes either a long spear or a three-section staff. 80
• Materialized Zanpakuto commonly resemble humans, though beast-like forms are possible; Gokuraku manifested as a giant white fox. 244

Release and Function

Shikai

• Shikai is the first release form of a Zanpakuto and grants abilities unique to its wielder. 80
• It does not necessarily greatly increase Spiritual Pressure, but it enables a Soul Reaper to build a combat style around the released weapon's properties. 80
• Dialogue and attunement with the Zanpakuto are the conventional requirements for Shikai. 150

Bankai

• Bankai training requires a Zanpakuto to materialize and submit to its wielder. 150

• A Bankai-state Zanpakuto may possess overwhelming capabilities, such as Gokuraku's Rule-Parsing, which analyzes attacks and countermeasures. 251 252

Strength and Limitations

• A materialized Zanpakuto's maximum strength remains limited by its master's Spiritual Pressure and abilities. 237
• Zanpakuto can absorb ambient Spirit Particles to repair themselves, and an owner's Spiritual Pressure can greatly accelerate the process. 236
• A Zanpakuto can generally self-repair unless it is destroyed while in Bankai. 81 236

Materialization

• Zanpakuto can materialize during Bankai training or through a Transformed Spirit Body. 236

Zanpakuto Rebellion

• Muramasa incited a rebellion by amplifying Zanpakuto dissatisfaction with their masters rather than creating that dissatisfaction himself. 242
• His Bankai, Gokujō Tsumakiyori Muramasa, allows him to enter an enemy's inner world, read memories, and brainwash unguarded Zanpakuto. 242
• Rebellious Zanpakuto could be restored by defeating and slaying their materialized forms; they then dispersed into Spirit Particles and returned to their owners' blades. 236
