Background

Duan Mu fell from the sky while asleep three years before his recorded introduction and discovered a mysterious system in his mind. It took him six months to determine that the system awards experience points when women’s favorability toward him increases; the amount depends on their status, strength, and existing favorability. 1

Rather than exploit the system through insincere relationships, Duan Mu adopts the principle that sincerity must be met with sincerity. He helps women with everyday problems, from finding lost pets to giving advice and caring for children, while deliberately distancing himself from women whose apparent affection does not register in the system. 1

In Rukongai, Duan Mu operates a Yorozuya that handles commissions such as construction and medical visits. He also establishes a Soul Reaper cram school, using his system-enhanced Kidō knowledge to teach more than one hundred students. The experience gained through the school is largely reinvested into Kidō so he can teach at the necessary level. 17 30 34

After surviving his battle with Daimaru, Duan Mu trains under Shiba Kūkaku in the Great Kūkaku Training Hall. Her Spirit Crest-based pressure training substantially improves his Spiritual Pressure and gives him a deeper understanding of Spiritual Power application. 19 20 21

Appearance

Duan Mu is a black-haired young man usually recognized by his black work uniform, which becomes his trademark in Rukongai. He later wears a haori bearing the character “One.” 16 30 329

  • Black hair. 16
  • Usually wears black work clothes or a black work uniform. 15 30
  • His clothing is often visibly bloodstained after close-quarters battles. 15
  • Carries a sealed longsword-form Zanpakutō after obtaining one. 95 98

Personality

Duan Mu is socially awkward and describes himself as nearly agoraphobic, with negative social experience before arriving in Soul Society. He nevertheless makes a deliberate effort to treat others sincerely, building his relationships through practical help, patience, and reliable work. 1

His ordinary demeanor is gentle, polite, and professional. He takes commissions seriously, teaches willingly, and treats Fourth Division personnel with respect. His concern for friends and patients is genuine, even when his system benefits from their favorability. 40 77 230

In battle, this gentleness can disappear abruptly. Duan Mu becomes cold, ruthless, and frighteningly efficient, targeting vital points and adapting rapidly to lethal situations. He eventually realizes that his pursuit of strength is not solely self-preservation: he enjoys combat itself. 15 28

He is also highly self-critical. After nearly being killed by Jiu Su, Duan Mu recognizes that superior techniques and Spiritual Pressure cannot replace combat instinct, and resolves to learn from stronger, more experienced people. 42

Abilities & Skills

Experience Point System

Duan Mu’s system converts increased favorability from women into experience points, which he can spend to activate or enhance abilities. Men provide no experience points through favorability. 1

  • Experience rewards scale with the other person’s status, strength, and favorability level. 1
  • He can instantly activate a witnessed or learned skill by spending experience, receiving foundational knowledge and practical muscle memory. 1 114
  • Favorability above 60 changes into romantic value and produces far larger rewards; Duan Mu intentionally avoids crossing this threshold. 1
  • He normally reserves experience points for bottlenecks, emergencies, or skills he cannot efficiently train on his own. 1 220

Kidō

Kidō is Duan Mu’s broadest field of expertise. He studies offensive, binding, defensive, healing, and investigative spells, favoring versatility over reliance on a single finishing move. 114

  • Uses Hadō #4: Byakurai as an early primary offensive spell. 16
  • Uses powerful higher-numbered spells including Bakudō #61: Rikujōkōrō, Hadō #63: Raikōhō, Hadō #73: Sōren Sōkatsui, Hadō #88: Flying Dragon Slaying Sky Shaking Thunder Cannon, and Hadō #91: Thousand-Hand Bright Sky Cannon. 39 114 143 282
  • Can cast Kidō without incantation through Canceled Incantation, a capability that shocks Captain Komamura Sajin. 171 177
  • Develops a modified Bakudō #58: Grab the Bird’s Toes and Chase the Sparrow that functions as a Spiritual Pressure radar. 91
  • The modified detection spell can sense spiritual beings within a 15-kilometer radius, including concealed targets and those within Gigai. 91
  • High-sensitivity detection overloads his mind with information and can cause tremors and nosebleeds. 91

Healing Kidō and Medical Knowledge

Duan Mu activates Healing Kidō after witnessing Soul Reapers treat an injured man. Its system-granted knowledge includes healing methods, medicinal herbs, and anatomy. 9

  • He can heal his own severe wounds during combat, allowing him to continue fighting after injuries that would otherwise incapacitate him. 40
  • His healing proficiency is considered comparable to Fourth Division standards. 19 45
  • He treats injured Soul Reapers at the Comprehensive First Aid Station and is regarded by many Fourth Division members as effectively their Lieutenant. 230
  • His medical knowledge improves his understanding of weak points, joints, and the spiritual body. 3 171

Hakuda

Duan Mu’s Hakuda combines system-provided combat knowledge with practical adaptation in battle. 1 3

  • Possesses detailed knowledge of stances, force generation, Spiritual Pressure reinforcement, acupoints, joints, and vital points. 3
  • Can kill opponents with precisely placed strikes to vulnerable areas. 16
  • Uses bare-handed combat to overwhelm the Maggot’s Nest prisoners and train against multiple fighting styles. 72
  • Plans to integrate Hakuda with Healing Kidō and mobility techniques to develop new applications. 32

Shunpo

Duan Mu trains Shunpo alongside Hakuda from an early stage, later creating a personalized technique under life-or-death pressure against Gen'nai Kura. 3 59

  • His improvised Shunpo increases both speed and striking power by combining Hakuda, Kidō intensity, and his own Spiritual Power characteristics. 59 60
  • Receives advanced Shunpo material from Yoruichi, including the Shihoin Clan technique Utsusemi. 115
  • Can combine different Shunpo methods, though maintaining the bodily burden of two types requires constant Physique investment. 203
  • His movement and Kidō integration allow him to evade attacks in ways opponents mistake for precognition. 39

Zanjutsu and Zanpakutō

Duan Mu initially develops Zanjutsu through practice despite lacking a Zanpakutō. His swordsmanship grows rapidly by observing and imitating stronger fighters. 1 101

  • Learns and adapts during his clash with Kenpachi Zaraki, forcing Zaraki back for the first time. 101
  • Advances Zanjutsu from Advanced to Top-tier through repeated combat against Unohana Retsu. 233
  • Obtains a Zanpakutō that manifests as a longsword, but has it sealed to prevent release. 95 98
  • His complete Shikai creates a four-minute game domain in which both combatants become ordinary participants bound by the game’s rules. 160
  • Uses a Bankai named Gokuraku during his battle with Aizen. 280

Physique, Regeneration, and Spiritual Void Crest

Duan Mu’s Physique becomes one of his defining strengths, improving his defense, physical power, recovery, and capacity to withstand his own Spiritual Pressure. 163 205

  • Can rapidly close wounds by investing experience points into Physique during battle. 135
  • Develops regeneration comparable to a Hollow’s super-fast regeneration, though vital spiritual-body areas still require immediate intervention. 163 220
  • Uses the Development Spirit Crest to support Spiritual Pressure growth. 96 115
  • Combines the Hollow Crest and Development Spirit Crest into the Spiritual Void Crest, enabling him to break his Spiritual Pressure limit barrier. 171
  • At 900,000 Physique proficiency, gains a bodily rule that resists and weakens Spiritual Pressure; Aizen can counter it by changing the nature of his own Spiritual Pressure. 280
  • Can employ Hollow-like techniques, including Cero, through Soul Reaper Spiritual Pressure rather than relying on Hollow power directly. 227 274

  • Shuhei Hisagi — Ninth Division subordinate who addresses him as Captain Duan Mu and struggles with being ordered not to intervene in Duan Mu’s battle against Aizen. 239
  • Habutae, Diao Ao, and Nishijin-ori — Rukongai allies commonly regarded as Duan Mu’s subordinates despite his lack of intent to build a faction. He trains and supports them, and they form part of his West Rukongai influence. 98
  • Aizen Sōsuke — Major adversary who repeatedly analyzes Duan Mu’s unusual body, regeneration, and Spiritual Pressure. Their conflict tests Duan Mu’s Bankai and first-stage Physique. 203 280
  • Tier — An Espada ally who entrusts the Picaro’s secrecy to Duan Mu and recognizes his concern for children despite his misgivings. 156
