Background / History
Death Train was originally the solo Con artist dungeon Train Exploration, numbered 0927. It later changed into a multiplayer instance called Death Train, with its difficulty raised from B-Class to A-Class for ordinary players and S-Class for Con artists. Forum accounts identify it as a polluted and cursed dungeon. 19 20
The dungeon is set aboard a train traveling through mid-19th-century London. Its passengers vanished one after another, yet the train continued to travel endlessly between its origin and destination, becoming a ghost-train legend. 1 21
The underlying tragedy began with Jack, the train conductor, whose dissociative identities included Mary. Jack killed train attendant El after she discovered his nighttime behavior and attempted to report it. El's death, combined with the passengers' indifference to the warning signs around them, drove the priest Vien—El's lover—to resurrect her and curse the train. 21 27 28
Vien's curse forced Jack and Mary's personalities to repeat the events surrounding El's disappearance. Each cycle culminated in the passengers being led toward Carriage No. 3 and slaughtered by El. The curse could be broken only when someone uncovered Jack's abnormality and prevented the train from continuing its course. 27 28
Environment
Death Train presents itself as a dark, decaying train whose carriages conceal different fragments of its history.
- The early carriages contain seats covered in newspaper-like diary pages and scattered Hello Kitty dolls. 1 12
- The diary pages record conflicting accounts from Jack, Mary, and other witnesses; the Teacher skill [Decipher] is needed to read their English text. 12 13 26 27
- Carriage No. 3 is the central location of the curse and becomes accessible during the second half of the instance. 15 21 27
- At 50% exploration, day abruptly shifts into night and the dungeon unlocks its final phase. 15
Dungeon Mechanics
Two-Part Exploration
| Phase | Progress / Time | Events |
|---|---|---|
| First exploration | 0%–50% | Players investigate the train's carriages, uncover the Jack-and-Mary mystery, and contend with a hidden God Slayer and Accomplice. 1 7 15 |
| Intermission | After 50% | The first-half completion is saved; players are returned to reality before being required to enter the instance again. Qin Shang receives El's Letter. 15 |
| Second exploration | 50%–100% | Night falls, players enter the final section centered on Carriage No. 3, and the curse's true origin can be uncovered. 21 22 27 |
Player Roles
The instance assigns or conceals several roles among the participants.
- Passenger — Qin Shang's initial identity; passengers must survive and investigate the disappearances. 1
- God Slayer — A hostile NPC hidden among the apparent players; finding this figure is a required side objective. 1 15
- Accomplice — A second hostile role whose presence contributed to the first tunnel massacre. 7
- Team Leader — The sole leader whom an Assistant must identify and protect. 7 21
- Assistant — A role inherited by Qin Shang from the deceased Teacher, granting access to that player's professional skills during the second round. 21 30
Nightfall and the Red-Skirt Phantom
At night, the curse manifests a burly shadowy figure in a red dress carrying Jack's hunting rifle. It embodies the merged consequences of Jack, Mary, and El's curse-bound existence. 24 27 28
- It reacts to sound, movement, and fleeing behavior. 23 25
- Remaining still and silent prevents immediate attack; Qin Shang clears the main quest by following this “balance” rather than fighting the entity. 23 28
- It consumes corpses, explaining the disappearance of bodies from Carriage No. 2. 24 32
- Its red skirt reflects Mary's identity and the recurring stigma surrounding Jack's cross-dressing behavior. 21 28
Connected Figures
- Jack — The train conductor whose fear, paranoia, and nighttime killings began the original tragedy; he shares one body with Mary. 14 21
- Mary — Jack's timid alternate identity, associated with a red dress and the daytime investigation into the disappearances. 14 21 28
- El — Train attendant murdered by Jack; resurrected by Vien and later becomes the vengeful force at the center of the curse. 21 27 28
- Vien — Priest and El's lover; created the curse to punish Jack, Mary, and the passengers who ignored El's plight. 27 28
- Qin Shang — Investigates the train across both exploration phases, identifies the curse's logic, and completes its main quest at 100% exploration. 15 27 28
Story Role / Major Arcs
Initial Exploration
Qin Shang first enters Death Train as his inaugural Path of the Gods instance. The train begins with six registered players despite seven apparent people in the carriage, immediately revealing that a God Slayer has infiltrated the group. 1
During the first half, Qin Shang explores the carriages, reads the diary fragments through inherited [Decipher], and deduces that Jack and Mary are the same person. He reaches 50% exploration after fifteen hours and receives El's Letter before the instance forces an intermission. 6 14 15
Return to Carriage No. 3
On re-entry, the dungeon begins its night phase. Qin Shang learns that silence and stillness are necessary to survive the red-skirted manifestation, while other players are killed for fleeing or making noise. 22 23 24 25
After obtaining Vien's diary, Qin Shang identifies the curse as the true reason Death Train became polluted. He completes the main quest by confronting the situation through “balance”: he neither moves, makes noise, nor attacks the phantom. 27 28
Post-Clearance Anomaly
Although the main quest is completed, Qin Shang remains inside the instance during the remaining departure time. When Eagle of Justice and Buddha Saves the Predestined try to kill him for the Con artist bounty, El's manifestation appears outside its expected location, kills the Elder Priest, and drives off the Sheriff. 31 32 33
Trivia
- The dungeon retained the identifier 0927 after changing from Train Exploration into Death Train. 19 32
- Before Qin Shang's run, official records had no usable strategy for Death Train's second exploration phase. 20
- A previously recorded clearer, “Fiercely Licking Cockroach Jade Feet,” was known to have cleared the dungeon but had died in Path of the Gods before a guide could be obtained. 20
