After the all-out assault ended, the war entered a dull standoff. For several days, nothing happened besides clearing the battlefield.
The first step in clearing the battlefield was collecting the spoils.
Gagnor had really wanted to enjoy the same "tax exemption" on spoils as last time in the Tidal Lands, on the grounds that "the alchemist's contract contained no clause about spoils."
Unfortunately, he didn't get his wish this time.
For one thing, the spoils this time were organized around combat squads. Each squad turned in part of its spoils collectively, and the rest was distributed within the squad, making it difficult for him to exercise his personal privilege.
For another, the quartermaster had discovered a loophole: if someone handed their spoils over to Gagnor for safekeeping, they could easily "evade taxes" on them. For a mercenary group—or any army, for that matter—this was clearly something to prevent.
Thus, in the end, Gagnor's spoils were distributed according to the usual rules, just like everyone else's.
Fortunately, the team unanimously recognized his contributions, so he still received quite a lot. After all, he had directly killed five enemies, including a Level Three Hunter and a Level Four Warrior.
The Level Four Warrior had been judged as Level Three on Gagnor's panel, but his warrior badge was Level Four, so his contribution and spoils were calculated as Level Four.
Ill-fitting weapons and unsuitable armor made up the bulk of the spoils. Gagnor exchanged everything he couldn't use for money, bringing him an income of several hundred silver coins.
Some of the spoils were useful to him, such as arrows. The gray-haired archer had more than a dozen Enchanted Steel Arrows, and Gagnor kept them all for his own use.
The enchantments on the Enchanted Steel Arrows were basically all the same technique,
