Background

Dalis was imprisoned in a dungeon as an undead skeleton when Gagnor found her. In exchange for being freed, she accepted a Holy Name contract to serve him, but firmly negotiated to be treated as a servant rather than a slave and to be allowed to seek her missing father after no more than ten years of service. 69

To escape the dungeon, she used her Disguise Skill to pose first as a blue-haired girl and then as Gagnor's stonemason apprentice, “VanCleef.” She was born in 1382 of the Fangfro Calendar and died at seventeen; by 1456, she was chronologically seventy-four, though she still considered herself seventeen. 70

Dalis recalls the harsh Nadu eras with bitterness and distrusts the Church. Her knowledge of past papal successions led her and Gagnor to anticipate possible religious unrest following Fangfro VII's eventual succession. 70

After joining Gagnor's circle, she assisted the Gray Hawk mercenaries, hatched and raised Little Gu, drew Magic Runes, and studied Blood Elf magic alongside Gagnor. She hoped to find Undead Feasting so she could eat like a living person, and believed Akes Magic Academy might also hold clues to her father's whereabouts. 73 74 80

In the Fourth Reservoir ruins, Dalis performed undead-awakening rituals for Sindragosa's oracle. Her reward was the Gnome Transformation Mask, which gave her a convincing physical body and allowed her to eat, drink, sleep, and otherwise function as a living Gnome. 212 220

She later entered Akes Magic Academy, placing ninth in the written examination and demonstrating Extreme Cold Blizzard during the spellcasting test. She enrolled in Avis to focus on array magic, then joined the Magic Cuisine Society and the secretive Trackers Society while continuing her search for information about her father. 229 230 232 237 239

Appearance

Dalis's undeath is normally concealed through magic and disguises. Her preferred human-like guise is a slender blue-haired, blue-eyed girl; after obtaining the Transformation Mask, she publicly appears as a small blue-haired Gnome girl.

Dalis is resilient and self-possessed. Though initially desperate to escape the dungeon, she carefully negotiated the terms of her service and never accepted being called a slave. 69

She is cautious about exposing her undead nature and visibly uneasy around the Church, particularly because of historical persecution of witches and undead. Her public aloofness and poorly acted reverence for the Church initially made others regard her as paranoid. 71 80

Despite this caution, Dalis is excitable about magic, historical knowledge, food, and her owl. Gaining a body capable of eating after decades without food leaves her openly delighted and impatient to experience ordinary life. 72 220 236
