Mo Xinlan sought out Xia Wuji after learning that he had obtained the Heavy Water Sword Art on Ghost Sword Island. She asked him to teach it to her because the art was a key to the destroyed Profound Water Palace's secret realm. Her deeper goal was to obtain a Profound Water Lotus Seed to save her mother, Mo Ying 482 494. With Xia Wuji's instruction, she grasped the art's basics in half an hour, later reaching Minor Accomplishment and then Great Accomplishment 483 492 496.

She led a party into the secret realm despite opposition from Dugu Ming. When Zhang Jun accused Xia Wuji of deception and proposed a different entrance, Mo Xinlan chose to follow Xia Wuji; his route brought her group inside 497 499 500. At Profound Water Lake, she offered to share the lotus seeds with Dugu Ming's group, but they attacked. She used a strength-boosting pill to hold off Qin Tao 506. Later, Zhang Yang threatened to destroy the last seed unless she killed Xu Qi. Mo Xinlan refused to betray her friend, and Xia Wuji secured the seed and helped the group escape 508 509.

After returning, Mo Xinlan rewarded the expedition's survivors and used Seven Day Forget River Pills to conceal sensitive events. She brought the lotus seed to Mo Ying and invited Xia Wuji to Purgatory Island 510 515. When Mo Ying's condition later deteriorated, Mo Xinlan persuaded her to accept Xia Wuji's treatment; his Life and Death Celestial Art stabilized her condition 521 540. Mo Xinlan and Xia Wuji acknowledged their feelings for each other, and Mo Ying accepted him as her daughter's partner 540 541.

Personality

Mo Xinlan is devoted to her mother, but will not sacrifice her companions to save her. She rejects both Dugu Ming's demand that she surrender Xia Wuji and Zhang Yang's demand that she kill Xu Qi 497 508. She takes responsibility for losses on her expedition and honors her promises to its survivors 499 510.

Her composure can give way to open emotion around those closest to her. She insists on staying with Mo Ying despite the danger, and attempts to return for Xia Wuji when she believes he is facing a powerful enemy alone 509 521.

Mo Xinlan has strong swordsmanship talent and prior experience with heavenly-tier sword arts 483.
