Background
Tang Sanzang is the reincarnation of Golden Cicada, a former disciple of Tathagata who was sent through mortal reincarnation after dozing during a sermon. Although his past-life connection to Golden Cicada affects several of his relationships, Tang Sanzang's personality differs substantially from that of his predecessor. 529 613
He became disillusioned with the state of Buddhism and departed from it after comprehending Mahayana Buddhism. Rather than seeking scriptures solely for himself, he set out to bring Mahayana teachings to the Western Buddhist sect and trigger a rebirth of Buddhism. 512 526
After Tang Sanzang converted the Jing River Dragon King, Emperor Tang Li Shimin supported his westward mission, furnished him with the Brocade Kasaya and Nine-Ringed Staff, and saw him off from the Great Tang. 409 512 514
Appearance
Tang Sanzang is a notably handsome and refined monk, usually dressed in a kasaya. His reputation and bearing make him immediately recognizable as an eminent monk of the Great Tang. 591 964 1270
- Wears the radiant Brocade Kasaya bestowed by Emperor Tang Li Shimin. 409 591
- Is described as handsome enough to draw repeated romantic attention from women and demons alike. 964
- Possesses a calm, composed expression even while travelling through dangerous territory. 936
- At Hongfa Temple, he is seen seated upon a massive black lotus throne with a simple kasaya draped over him. 1270
Personality
Tang Sanzang is driven, impatient to reach Spirit Mountain, and unwavering in his desire to spread Mahayana Buddhism. Fame in the Great Tang pleases him briefly, but he ultimately treats it as unimportant compared with his larger ambitions. 513 547
He is compassionate and generally seeks to avoid needless killing. He instructs Wu Feng not to harm bandits, spares the White Elephant Demon after Wu Feng defeats him, and performs rites for the dead rather than leaving their souls unrested. 1022 1273 1302
His compassion is paired with stubbornness, pride, and suspicion. He initially rejects Marshal Tian Peng and General Juanlian despite their usefulness, and his vigilance after repeated encounters with disguised demons leads him to test even Venerable Kashyapa's identity. 612 668 731
Tang Sanzang's Buddhist resolve is genuine but not emotionless. He repeatedly faces temptation, feels affection for the Queen of Women's Country, and carries unresolved guilt over Juan Niang, a former devotee whose spirit later restores him to life. 677 898 1274

Perception and Deduction

- His deductions rely on incongruous behavior, such as a lone woman surviving on White Tiger Ridge or an elderly woman claiming she can bear children. 726
- Identifies suspicious strangers and disguises throughout the pilgrimage, though this vigilance also causes him to mistrust Venerable Kashyapa. 726 731 748
Buddhist Suppression and Combat
Although initially described as a mortal without magical power, Tang Sanzang later displays overwhelming Buddhist power.
- His body withstands a Hundred-Refined Steel Treasure Blade while stripped of all protective treasures. 619

- Endures Red Boy's Three True Fires without injury, suppresses Red Boy's imps with a glance, and captures Red Boy. 1289
- Single-handedly annihilates Zhenyuanzi's elite Daoist boys before performing rites for both them and their victims. 1302
- Predicts that Sha Wujing will attain Venerable status and Zhu Bajie will achieve Arhat fruit. 1289
Karma-Bearing Nature
Tang Sanzang bears the karma of the entire Primordial World, a burden that severely limits his freedom.
