History

Sacred Ark origins and capture

The First-Generation Nano Cores are identified as the Sacred Ark's defensive devices. Five known cores correspond to the Nano Vanguards Baldur, Hera, Fenrir, Tyr, and Jörmungandr; they were reportedly stored in five Sacred Ark slots before being taken. 106

During the Asgard conflict, the Nano Core was established as the source of a Nano Vanguard's power, located at the base of the host's spine. Removing or destroying it reverts the Vanguard to an ordinary Aesir. 109 Karl extracted Baldur's dark-purple core intact, while Basarol similarly avoided destroying Hera's core because both were considered spoils for research. 111

The captured cores and the Sacred Ark's AI system were placed under strict guard for study by Archmagos Yuramills, Sage Hwirdan, and the Adeptus Mechanicus. 111

Imperial integration

Yuramills determined that direct implantation into an Astartes' black carapace was safer than earlier proposals to implant or disperse the Nano Core through the body. The black carapace connects to the central nervous system, supplies bio-energy, isolates nano-toxins, and allows maintenance crews to remove accumulated toxins. 116

Karl became the first documented successful Astartes test subject. His enhanced physiological indicators validated the procedure, while the Nano Core used his nervous system, reinforced skeleton, circulation, and implanted organs to generate armour over his Power Armour. 116 117

Initial human-compatible designs were standardized for wider use, while specialized Chapter-specific cores remained expensive due to their development and resource demands. 127 139 By the time of the Warner Civilization campaign, Astartes had received fully revised Nano Cores; after further research, the technology became suitable for mass production despite each unit costing roughly as much as MK V Power Armour. 164

First-Generation Core instability

Tyberos forcibly integrated a First-Generation Nano Core after destroying a Nano Vanguard in battle. 140 His human genetic foundation proved incompatible with the Sacred Ark-derived core, leaving him incapacitated in a cultivation tank and requiring an inhibitor to restrain rapid nano-toxin production. 141 153

Research obtained from the Warner Civilization ultimately resolved Tyberos's First-Generation Core problem and lifted the restrictions affecting the other four First-Generation Cores. 163

Physical Characteristics

Individual cores vary in appearance. A blue Nano Core was observed escaping a cultivation tank and killing a nearby unknown individual, while Baldur's extracted core was a dark-purple cylindrical crystal. 109 111
