Two weeks ago.

West Virginia.

Terrible Parish.

Caroline drove from New York to this desolate place, carrying a newspaper with job postings circled around her.

There are people hiring caregivers here, and the weekly wage is quite high. Otherwise, no one would come to such a notorious ghost town.

The employer was clearly wealthy, living in a sprawling estate.

As soon as I drove from the main road, I saw a sign that read: Devereaux Manor, private property, no entry.

A path leads directly to the manor, lined with tall, ancient trees, giving it a sense of history.

Such places should ideally have dedicated staff to manage them, but what Caroline saw was desolation.

The large iron gate outside the manor was half-open, and the branches of the large trees next to it stretched into the middle of the gate, so that cars could touch it when they entered. In addition, the weather was a bit gloomy when Caroline arrived, which, combined with the desolate and deserted scene, made it quite eerie and terrifying.

However, Caroline was prepared for this. After looking around the manor, she went straight to knock on the door.

There was no response.

Caroline glanced at the rocking chair still swaying in the hallway outside, pushed the door, found it unlocked, and went inside.

The room was somewhat dark, and there was a statue of the Saintly Mother at the entrance. In this atmosphere, there was no sense of holiness at all; on the contrary, it added to the eerie and sinister feeling.

The murals on both sides of the living room also depict religious themes.

Caroline tied her hair into a ponytail and continued walking inside while calling out.

Upon arriving at the back garden, I saw an elderly couple.

The plump wife is giving her husband, who is sitting in a wheelchair, a haircut.

"This is the expression of true love."

Just then, a refined-looking middle-aged man in a suit walked up from behind, carrying a box, and said with a smile, "Just like a classic scene from a storybook, you must be Caroline, right?"

"Excuse me, the door wasn't locked, so I came in."

Caroline and the man in the suit exchanged a glance, and Caroline apologized.

"It doesn't matter."

The man in the suit chuckled, "This house is very big, it's normal that you can't hear me. My name is Luke Coleman, a real estate lawyer. We've talked on the phone before."

"Oh, yes."

Caroline suddenly realized.

While the two were chatting, the Fat Woman kept secretly watching them, her eyes full of scrutiny and indifference.

"The doctor said he only has a month left and is about to die."

Real estate lawyer Luke looked at the elderly man in the wheelchair and explained.

"I know."

Caroline nodded.

This information had been discussed previously over the phone.

"Veilly, she's here."

Luke shouted at the Fat Woman.

"This is Caroline Ellis, she used to be a nursing assistant at New York University Medical Center. Caroline, this is Valerie Daiwo."

Luke introduced the two of them.

"Your house is so beautiful."

Caroline praised.

The Fat Woman glanced at Luke with a flicker in her eyes, then ignored Caroline's greeting and walked directly into the room.

"I'm sorry, she's in a bad mood, and she's also quite traditional and thinks women should dress modestly."

Luke explained.

Caroline, wearing a tank top, smiled and looked at the old man in the wheelchair, "So, he can't speak at all?"

"No, because a stroke causes complete paralysis."

Luke shook his head.

Just then, the Fat Woman came over again and muttered, "She's from out of town, she definitely doesn't know the rules here, and what's with her accent?"

Luke put his arm around the Fat Woman and comforted her, "I know you wish she had a southern accent, but there's no one else like her."

The Fat Woman looked at Luke, who winked at her, and then glanced at Caroline from head to toe. She nodded helplessly, "Alright, but she certainly won't know the rules here."

"Can't find a caregiver, huh?"

Caroline expressed her dissatisfaction and immediately turned to leave.

However, after Luke persuaded him to stay, he decided to give it a try.

The Fat Woman hid by the window of the room the whole time, watching everything. When she saw Caroline being persuaded by Luke, she revealed a sinister smile.

This was the fifth female caregiver to apply for the job. She wasn't satisfied with the other four. Caroline wasn't satisfied either; she wanted a Black Pearl more, but time was running out.

Moreover, Luke seemed to really like this caregiver. Thinking of this, the Fat Woman glared at Luke's retreating figure.

In the end, Caroline accepted the offer, moved in, and received a master key.

This kind of manor has many rooms, requiring a whole set of keys, but the owner possesses a master key that can unlock all the locks.

Contrary to her previous refusal, the Fat Woman unexpectedly gave the key to Caroline.

Caroline took the key and began caring for her husband, Ben Daiwo, who had suffered a stroke and was paralyzed from the waist down, but she noticed many unusual things.

For example, Ben, who was completely paralyzed, looked at her with a gaze filled with fear and expectation, as if he were asking her for help or warning her.

The Fat Woman looked at her as if she were an object, and very rudely asked her if she had any tattoos.

Caroline retorted directly, saying that outsiders couldn't see it.

The Fat Woman shook her head and left, clearly somewhat dissatisfied but helpless.

When I was taking a shower at night, I felt like someone was watching me.

In such a large manor with so many rooms, there wasn't a single mirror. Where mirrors should have been hung, there were only traces of where they used to be; clearly, they had all been removed.

Then, the Fat Woman first reminded her not to wander around, as some rooms contained many precious antiques, and then intentionally or unintentionally asked her to help her retrieve some things.

As United States, my curiosity about the mysterious is ingrained in my bones.

The Fat Woman's cryptic words completely piqued Caroline's curiosity. She secretly took the master key and opened room after room, discovering many long-forgotten, mysterious, and strange things.

Deeply shocked, Caroline threatened to leave, forcing the Fat Woman to tell the story of the manor.

It turns out that this manor once had two black witch servants, a married couple, who dared to teach witchcraft to the manor owner's two children. In the end, they were hanged and burned alive by the manor owner on a big tree at the manor gate.

However, legend has it that their ghosts never left, and her husband may have suffered a stroke and become paralyzed because he encountered their ghosts.

The mysterious and terrifying things in the attic, which resembled an evil ritual, were left behind by the black witch couple.

Caroline initially didn't believe it, but under the Fat Woman's gradual guidance, she subconsciously went to the shop that specialized in selling these mysterious items and bought some protective items.

She suspected that the evil was not the ghost, but the Fat Woman herself.

On a stormy night, sensing danger, Caroline tries to escape with Ben, but they are chased by the Fat Woman. In a panic, she has no choice but to temporarily abandon Ben and escape to seek help from lawyer Luke.

Then she discovered that Luke was studying basic real estate law, which reminded her of what the Fat Woman had said about ghost possession. Just as she was about to escape, Luke knocked her unconscious and took her back to the manor.

When she woke up, she saw the Fat Woman and Luke looking at her with sinister smiles...
