Human Tragedy
Medical Center.
emergency room.
Barney!
Hearing that familiar, exaggerated shout, Adam looked in the direction of the sound and, sure enough, it was Barney.
What's wrong with you?
Adam walked over and said speechlessly, "Don't tell me you also participated in the Death Race for Babies?"
"Why not?"
Barney lay on the gurney, seemingly gazing at the sky at a 45-degree angle, chanting. "What a fun game, free and unrestrained..."
"You, so free-spirited, are wearing an expensive suit and riding a bicycle to a competition?"
Adam interrupted, "Speak like a human!"
"There was a really pretty girl inside. I made a bet with her that if I could get into the final party, she would agree to go on a date with me."
Barney smiled and nodded, a smug look on his face. "This is a challenge, and Barney Stinson never refuses a challenge... Oops!"
Before he could finish speaking, he let out a scream.
"Does it hurt?"
Adam withdrew his hand from his wound.
"Of course it hurts!"
Barney shouted.
"Pain is normal."
Adam asked seriously, "Where else does it hurt?"
"..."
Barney sensed Adam's deep malice and dared not say anything more.
He had no doubt that Adam would act on that idea as soon as he mentioned it.
"Left shin fracture."
After examining him, Adam said, "Nurse, call the orthopedic doctor for him."
"Okay, Dr. Duncan."
A nurse responded and left.
"Wow, Dr. Duncan!"
Barney felt as if he had discovered a new world.
Adam ignored him and moved on to the next patient.
A large number of patients flooded in throughout the morning, and the hospital was operating at full capacity.
Adam also treated several critically ill patients, all innocent victims of the Death Race for Babies. One of them had already died despite all efforts to save him.
Everyone missed lunchtime because there was simply no time to eat.
I was busy until nightfall.
"Adam, is Barney alright?"
Ted and his friends rushed over when they heard the news.
"Fine."
Adam casually remarked, "My left shinbone is broken, but it will heal in two or three months."
"This is so serious and you call it nothing?"
Ted exclaimed in surprise.
"He brought it on himself."
Adam asked coldly, "Who let him participate in the Death Race for Babies?"
Ted frowned.
Lily stopped him, looked at Adam, and asked with concern, "Adam, are you alright?"
"Fine."
Adam shook his head, looking downcast.
He saw that Lily and Marshall were still looking at him with concern.
Adam thought for a moment and sighed, "Do you know that because of this race, two innocent pedestrians have died? They both had wives and children and were the pillars of their families."
"Ah!"
Lily gasped in surprise.
Ted's expression also changed; he now understood why Adam was behaving this way.
"Barney deserved it!"
Lily's eyes reddened. "Two happy families have been completely shattered because of people like them who go crazy."
The United States emphasizes advance consumption, so people don't have much savings. When an economic crisis hits, large numbers of people lose everything. It's a classic example of a life that can be one step to heaven and one step to hell.
These two innocent passersby who died were the breadwinners of their families; it would have been better if they had insurance.
If they hadn't bought it, the widows and orphans left behind would have been truly miserable.
The most common thing medical staff said today was, "I must buy insurance tomorrow."
This shows how deeply it touched him.
"Do you think this is bad enough?"
Adam said expressionlessly, "One of the two did not die on the spot from unsuccessful resuscitation, but was hit by a motorcycle that was trying to avoid a large number of bicycles, and was left in a deep coma and brain dead."
The doctor called his wife and daughters, explained the situation, and then asked them to donate organs from the brain-dead man.
First, there are the major organs: the heart, lungs, liver, and kidneys.
Next is his cornea, because corneal transplants can restore sight to blind patients.
The brain-dead man's wife was only in her thirties, and his daughter was just over ten years old; both were kind and honest people. Seeing this, they naturally agreed and signed their names with tears in their eyes.
"Then what?"
Lily held Marshall's hand tightly.
"Then there's his skin."
Adam said blankly, "Because his skin can help burn patients."
"What?!"
Lily and the other two exclaimed in unison.
"That's too cruel!"
"Then what about his funeral?"
"How could you make such a cruel suggestion in front of a widow and her daughter who have just lost their husband and father?!"
"Well."
Adam sighed, "So the female doctors who were initially so eager to do this eventually couldn't face the tearful eyes and questions of widows and orphans, and came to me to persuade them."
This female doctor was none other than Cristina.
The reason she was so proactive was that this brain-dead patient had a healthy heart, making him a perfect match for the Chief of Surgery's VIP client.
If the brain-dead man's wife and daughters agree, she can participate in the heart transplant surgery and also win over the Chief of Surgery, killing two birds with one stone.
To this end, she and Saintly Mother. Liz even defied the medical orders of Dr. Shepherd and Dr. Burke, and instead of waiting six hours to declare the patient dead, they forcibly administered blood transfusions to the patient when his condition was critical. Through the Chief of Surgery, they repaired the brain-dead patient's body, making it possible to prepare for a heart transplant.
Even someone as cold and proactive Cristina couldn't face the grieving widow and her orphaned daughter and backed down. One can only imagine the tragedy that ensued.
Did you go?
Lily said with tears in her eyes, "Don't tell me you're gone."
"I went."
Adam sighed, "Although it's cruel, the bodies of brain-dead people can indeed help more patients, and that's the greatest virtue. As a doctor, all I can do is try my best to comfort them."
As this was the most tragic case he had taken on, Adam had decided to investigate their family's situation afterward, and if they didn't have insurance, he would secretly offer them help.
This is different from those cases where people court disaster. Whenever he encounters such situations, if he has enough financial resources, he cannot stand idly by. He will provide assistance in secret to the best of his ability, which is also a token of his goodwill.
Although this merit is completely disproportionate to the effort, and the Lifespan points gained are negligible, it is still worth it for the sake of clear thinking.
"Did they finally agree?"
Lily sobbed.
"I agreed."
Adam said expressionlessly, "What's worse is that they're crying, while the culprits are laughing."
Many riders were clamoring for the doctor to stitch them up, as they were eager to continue this 'grand event'.
Some even started dating female doctors, forcibly kissing them in a roguish and cool manner.
Our Barney, even though he's bedridden with a broken leg, believe it or not, he's definitely harassing female doctors and nurses too!
"Damn Barney! Damn Death Race for Babies!"
Lily cursed bitterly through her tears.
Marshall and Ted remained silent.
Barney is definitely capable of doing something like that.
Previously, they had somewhat envied Barney's carefree and unrestrained nature.
But after hearing Adam's description of the human tragedy, that feeling vanished, replaced by a jarring sense of unease...
