Cooper's Home.
"My baby is going to college."
Mary choked up.
"Yeah."
Little Sheldon's father, George, was also overcome with emotion.
"Who did you have him with? Was it that four-eyed nerd from before?"
That evening, after hearing the news, Little Sheldon's Grandma leaned close to her daughter Mary's ear and teased, "You can tell me in secret."
"Mom!"
Mary could only shoot her an exasperated glare.
"Okay, okay."
Little Sheldon's Grandma raised her hands and shrugged. "I've lived to this age and thought I'd seen everything, but an eleven-year-old elementary school student going to college? That's a first!
There isn't even a single college graduate in our family. George probably learned math from his gym teacher. Then a genius like Shelly suddenly pops up—can you blame me for wondering?"
"..."
Little Sheldon's father George had no answer. He glanced at Little Sheldon, who sat there with a solemn expression and looked nothing like him, then lifted a bottle of Lone Star Beer and began guzzling it down.
This depressing "joke" was not the first time he had heard it.
In fact, ever since Little Sheldon had revealed his genius, many people around them had made this "joke." It would have been impossible for him not to have doubts at first.
But he still trusted his wife, Mary.
Mary was a devout believer. He had swept her off her feet with a motorcycle when she was a teenager, and she had borne him three children. He had absolutely no reason to doubt her loyalty.
He could only comfort himself with the explanation Mary always gave Missy when she asked why Sheldon was so smart while she, his twin sister, struggled even with math problems.
That was, Little Sheldon was a "special gift from God."
"But it's such a shame."
Once Mary accepted that her little baby was about to go to college, her mindset changed again. "It would be wonderful if Paige could go to college with Shelly."
"No, thank you."
Remembering what it was like attending class with Paige, Little Sheldon shook his head repeatedly.
"What was the name of that school she's planning to attend? Prince-something?"
George asked casually.
As a football coach, he only knew the bare minimum about elite universities.
"Princeton University."
Mary rolled her eyes at him. "One of the top ten universities in the world. It's far better than the University of Texas at Austin."
"Yes."
Little Sheldon nodded. "Einstein once taught there, but Princeton's strongest field is mathematics. Caltech's physics is truly world-class. Unfortunately, I can't go to either."
Princeton was the first choice for those overpowered transmigrators. That monstrous top student Lü and that black-tech genius student Lu had both gone there to show off.
"Shelly."
Mary looked at Little Sheldon apologetically.
Both Princeton University and Caltech had invited Little Sheldon, but unlike Paige's mother, she could not simply move to New Jersey to accompany him. She could only make Little Sheldon settle for a university a tier below.
The University of Texas at Austin was still a good school, consistently ranked among the world's top hundred and one of the "public Ivy League" schools. But everyone knew public universities could not compare to private ones, and imitation Ivy League schools could not compare to the real thing.
In the future, Sheldon would routinely look down on Howard's alma mater, MIT, and even Leonard's alma mater, Princeton. Howard and Leonard would never argue back by citing university rankings, not because Sheldon's University of Texas at Austin was better than MIT or Princeton.
It was because Sheldon was about the same age as them, yet had entered college at eleven. By the time Leonard and the others began working, he was already a senior with three or four years of work experience. And by then, he possessed a BS (Bachelor of Science), MS (Master of Science), MA (Master of Arts), PhD (Doctor of Philosophy), and ScD (Doctor of Science)—multiple degrees that made people cry, "Oh, my God."
He did not need to take pride in his school. His school needed to take pride in him.
Besides, IQ was what it was. High was high, low was low. There was simply no hiding it.
Sheldon normally did not think highly of or pay attention to Leonard and the others' work, but whenever he did encounter it, a casual suggestion from him would leave them speechless and overwhelmed. In everyday life, Leonard and the others often could not even understand Sheldon's papers.
In the scientific hierarchy of contempt, Sheldon's research in Theoretical Physics looked down upon Leonard's experimental physics and Rajesh's astrophysics, not to mention Howard's mechanical engineering when he had not even earned a PhD.
Sheldon could even serve as Howard's Doctoral Supervisor.
Under such circumstances, Howard and the others had no way to refute Sheldon's disdain from higher up the hierarchy.
"It's okay, Mom."
Little Sheldon showed rare understanding. "I can go to Caltech for my master's and PhD later."
"So Sheldon's graduating?"
His older brother Georgie Jr. laughed happily. "Then who are you planning to invite as your date to the graduation dance? Mom?"
"Georgie Jr.!"
Mary glared fiercely at him.
"Why would I need to invite a date?"
Little Sheldon frowned. "I don't need one at all."
"Every boy graduating from high school needs to invite a date."
Georgie Jr. chuckled. "Anyone who doesn't get one will be mocked as trash."
"That applies to ordinary people like you."
Little Sheldon said seriously, "I'm not like you."
"..."
Georgie Jr.'s face immediately darkened. He complained, "A graduation without a date is incomplete, anyway."
"Shelly."
Little Sheldon did not care, but Mary took it to heart. This was such an important stage in her baby's life. How could she let him have any regrets?
After all, there was a kind of regret called your mother thinking you had regrets.
"How about inviting Paige to be your date?"
"She has to attend her own school's graduation dance."
Little Sheldon frowned. "Besides, I don't need one at all."
"Then how about letting Missy go with you?"
After pondering for a long while, Mary suddenly had an idea.
"Pfft!"
"No!"
Georgie Jr. burst out laughing, while Missy screamed in horror.
In the end, Little Sheldon obediently listened to his mother as always, while Missy's opposition was rejected without surprise. She would accompany Little Sheldon to the graduation dance as his date.
Adam and the Fruit Hard Candy Band would serve as the performing band for the school's major party for the sixth time.
Soon, the day of the graduation ceremony arrived.
That day, two families moved into the small town.
"Karen, come with me."
A pretty long-legged girl grabbed her best friend and was about to head out.
"Jennifer, where are we going?"
Karen was surprisingly dressed in a very unfashionable way, nothing like her long-legged best friend.
"To our new school."
The long-legged girl said excitedly, "The Fruit Hard Candy Band, the first band to perform 'Don't Cry,' is at this school. I heard the lead singer is really handsome."
"We just got here. Shouldn't we wait until after we enroll?"
Karen hesitated.
"Please."
The long-legged girl complained, "You're so fierce and wicked, you go everywhere. What are you afraid of? Oh, right, will it rain tonight?"
"Don't do this, Jennifer."
Karen dodged the long-legged girl's "An Lushan Claws," but in the end, she could not bear to refuse her. Using the methods of the Long-Armed Ape and the divine powers of the Intelligent Stone Monkey, she said shyly, "No rain~"
