Background / History
Rise in Hell and the Life God Realm
Dannington originated in Hell’s Sea of Chaos, where he became known as a Seven-star Demon specializing in soul attacks. One reported victory involved killing an Earth Law Seven-star Demon with a single soul attack. His cold, eccentric disposition kept his name relatively obscure despite his strength 88.
With his Death Rule cultivation only one step from a new realm, he traveled to the Life God Realm to challenge powerful opponents. He chose it before the Underworld because he believed the connection between Life and Death could provide fresh ideas rather than merely a favorable cultivation environment 91.
He arranged a challenge against Alfred, the Prefect of Amber Prefecture. During the waiting period, his victories over Seven-star Sprites attracted spectators and experts from other planes to Amber City. Alfred initially dismissed him as a specialist exploiting weak soul defenses, but reconsidered after discovering Linley’s interest in him 88 89.
Recruitment as a Sovereign’s Emissary
Both combatants used Sovereign Power during the duel. Dannington broke through Alfred’s Life Strangler technique and was about to kill him when Linley intervened through a Life Sovereign projection. Linley declared Alfred defeated and immediately offered Dannington an emissary position, which he accepted 90 91.
Dannington selected a Material Defense Sovereign Artifact to compensate for his human physique. Linley also supplied Sovereign Power, a Sovereign Token, and a Summoning Parchment. Dannington requested permission to continue his challenges, promising to join the Underworld’s Faith War within a thousand years whether or not he achieved Grand Perfection 91.
He later fulfilled that agreement. After repeated random teleportations from the Life God Realm, he reached the Underworld near the Sacred Mountain of the Undead and traveled to the Ghost Legion’s main camp. Linley considered lending him the Black Pearl necklace to assist his cultivation, but withheld it to protect its secret 94.
Grand Perfection and Sparring with Linley
After reaching Grand Perfection, Dannington summoned Linley on the Candlelight Plane. Their sparring revealed that Linley’s projected avatar could resist his Willpower through an unusual technique. Dannington promised to keep that ability secret, and the two stopped because their battle was devastating the material plane 135 136.
In Linley’s Small Death Plane, Dannington served as a sparring partner for further Death Rule research. His Heaven and Earth Lose Color move provided Linley with inspiration. He then fought Linley’s Grand Perfection Lightning Divine Avatar, acknowledged defeat against Judgment, and eventually surrendered after Linley’s Magnetic Field domain forced him to expend Death Element Sovereign Power to escape 137 138.
Faith War Campaigns
Dannington had previously led the Ghost Legion’s conquest of the Xilin Plane. When the Heavenly Punishment Army and Star Army recaptured it and killed Berkot’s strongest Divine Avatar, he volunteered to return personally. He commanded an expedition combining Ghost Legion and Green Leaf Army forces 138 139.
After learning that the enemy had prepared a teleportation-array ambush, he concealed his knowledge and entered with only two companions’ Divine Avatars, ordering the main army to await instructions. His opening death curtain killed almost all the assembled enemy Gods in less than a breath. Leonard, Starlight, and several other powerful opponents survived the residual attack by activating Sovereign Power 140.
Later, Dannington and fellow Grand Perfection High-God Ninisha commanded two routes of the Lightning Element Divine Plane’s forces against the Light God Plane. Their victory completed the faction’s tenth consecutive planar-war win. Linley rewarded Dannington with a Death-attribute Soul Defense Sovereign Artifact 143.
Appearance
- Hair: Usually described as long, dark blue, sometimes disheveled or moving like snakes; the duel passage instead describes it as dark green 88 90 94 135.
- Eyebrows and eyes: Sword-like eyebrows and a deep, icy gaze 88 90.
- Clothing: Wears dark blue robes when arriving in the Underworld and black robes when visiting Ghost Legion colleagues 94 138.
Personality
Dannington is cold and reserved toward strangers, but considerably warmer with familiar colleagues. After becoming a Grand Perfection High-God, he still accepts Berkot’s company without putting on airs and jokes comfortably with Frederitz 88 136 139.
He actively seeks strong opponents, treating combat as a source of cultivation insight. That enthusiasm is tempered by preparation: before challenging Alfred, he investigated whether the prefect possessed a Sovereign Artifact that could counter his soul attacks. He also refuses the prospect of facing Linley’s unrestricted power when he realizes it could become a one-sided beating 91 138.
His confidence rises sharply after Grand Perfection, to the point that he initially regards most Sovereigns as beneficiaries of age and luck. Facing Linley’s true form diminishes that arrogance; witnessing Linley’s unusual abilities subsequently strengthens his willingness to serve him 136 137.

- Evasive movement: Moves like a ghost and merges into dense Death Power to weave through gaps in lightning attacks 137.

- Allows him to contend with Linley’s projected avatar without using an attack artifact 135.
- Provides substantial resistance to damage, though Linley’s Magnetic Field techniques can still restrain and injure him 137 138.

- Alfred — Challenge opponent. Dannington defeats him, but Linley prevents the killing blow 90 91.
- Frederitz — Friend and fellow emissary. They become close through joint material-plane conquests; Frederitz witnesses Dannington’s Grand Perfection strength and agrees to protect Linley’s secret 136.
- Berkot — Ghost Legion commander and expedition colleague. Dannington allows him to accompany the Xilin campaign, though Berkot worries that Dannington is underestimating Starlight 138 139.

Trivia
- Linley recognizes Dannington as a future Death Rule Grand Perfection expert from his memories of the original work; Dannington has not yet reached that realm when recruited 88 91.
- After Grand Perfection, Dannington greets Linley with a slight bow rather than kneeling, following the special courtesy Sovereigns extend to beings at that level 135 136.
