Background

Zhu Er comes from the wealthy Zhu family and claims direct descent from Ming founder Zhu Yuanzhang, a lineage he takes immense pride in. The family’s resources include prestigious cultivation methods and the ancestral magic artifact Ming Huang. 171 265

As a student in the five-person genius class, Zhu Er was a flashy and mischievous rich teenager. He once stole and mocked Chen Dinggen’s coin purse, only for Chen to break his leg. Zhu Er later apologized, and the two became close friends. 81 82 120

He became captain of the Third Patrol Team several years before the events in Wucheng. Under his command, the team became the leading patrol team in the Jiangsu, Zhejiang, and Shanghai region by overall combat record and accomplishments. 120 299

Appearance

Zhu Er is a slender, good-looking young man who favors an elaborate, fashionable presentation befitting his wealthy background. He is often associated with a “devilishly charming” and smug smile. 94 120 173

  • Often wears a black trench coat. 63
  • Carries the ornate ancestral sword Ming Huang. 265
  • Grew noticeable stubble after the destruction of his patrol team, eventually choosing to keep it. 317
  • His appearance and behavior are repeatedly compared to an overconfident husky by those around him. 262 299

Personality

Zhu Er is proud, vain, talkative, and intensely fond of showing off his wealth, lineage, looks, and strength. He strongly prefers his codename, [Prince], and dislikes being addressed by his full name. 59 94 His self-confidence frequently becomes arrogance, particularly when he assumes his talent or charm should impress others.

Despite this immaturity, he is dependable in a crisis. He assesses danger rationally, prepares before fighting, calls for outside support when necessary, and orders retreats when an enemy exceeds his team’s ability to handle. 120 296 His grief after his patrol team’s destruction changes him: he becomes withdrawn and guilt-ridden, then returns to battle with a heavier sense of responsibility toward the demons his fallen comrades never got to kill. 315 318 326

Story Role / Major Arcs

Pucheng and the Attempted Recruitment

Zhu Er is introduced as a Night Watchmen captain tracking a Level Five Great Demon in Pucheng. Lin Xiaoqi defeats the demon and takes its core, frustrating Zhu Er. 59 He later visits Wucheng to recruit her into his patrol team, but Lu Yibai defeats him in a Second Order-restricted spar. Zhu Er accepts the result and leaves without further conflict. 64 65

Xianhua Mountain Operations

Zhu Er and Chen Dinggen fight alongside other Night Watchmen against threats surrounding the Xianhua Mountain seal. Although impulsive at times, Zhu Er requests reinforcements rather than charging blindly into a dangerous operation. 120 127 128 During this period, he becomes a regular presence at the Answer Bar and serves as Lu Yibai’s daily sparring partner. 137

Apprenticeship Under the Sword King

Jealous of Lu Yibai’s rapid growth, Zhu Er seeks the legendary Sword King’s guidance. After blocking the old man’s finger-strike with Ming Huang, he is accepted as a disciple. 262 265 The Sword King’s harsh training and Sword Domain force Zhu Er to perfect his sword intent and attain a higher level of sword cultivation. 270 271

Demon Organization Counterattack

Zhu Er leads his patrol team into the operation against the Demon Organization. After discovering Deputy Ye’s corpse and recognizing the enemy’s overwhelming strength, he orders a retreat and calls Lu Yibai and Lin Xiaoqi for aid. 295 296 The operation nevertheless wipes out the Third Patrol Team apart from Zhu Er, leaving Chen Dinggen severely injured and comatose. 301 315

Reforging the Third Patrol Team

Crushed by guilt and grief, Zhu Er withdraws from others until Xiao Yao’s companionship and a battle against invading demons restore his fighting spirit. 315 316 He subsequently reaches Sword Heart Great Accomplishment, then challenges the organization’s plan to disband his team. By defeating the entire Second Patrol Team alone, he proves that he can preserve the Third Patrol Team as a one-man unit. 317 320

Inheriting the Sword King’s Legacy

After the Sword King’s death, Zhu Er receives Ren Pingsheng and gains a final lesson from the sword energy concealed within it. 351 He enters seclusion determined not to disgrace his master’s legacy. 352 He continues carrying the demon-slaying mission and retirement promise of every fallen member of his patrol team. 394
