Background / History

Ji Dekeng was a top-performing Wucheng Night Watchman whose promotion was delayed until he could find a suitable successor. He rejected multiple promising recruits because they were not suited to his lineage, then selected Lu Yibai for his unusually compatible spiritual-body attributes. He promoted Lu to succeed him in Wucheng while Lin Xiaoqi remained behind as Lu’s assistant. 4 5 13

After leaving Wucheng, Ji became the chief administrator of Modu, where he was already regarded as a legendary and approachable figure among the Night Watchmen. He regularly worked with Sakura Ning, the Modu office head, and personally handled threats such as hidden Fifth Tier Great Demons. 13 47

He perfected the Menstrual Pain cultivation method, whose original founders died before resolving its later-stage limitations. His exceptional longevity initially remained unexplained; official records listed him as born in 1969, though even Sakura Ning suspected those records were false. 47 153

Ji had lived through several generations of disciples and companions. Lu Yibai was his disciple in a previous life, while Lin Xiaoqi was raised by Ji after he found her at age eight with no memories of her earlier life. The mute Sword King, who followed Ji for years, was also acknowledged as his disciple shortly before his death. 312 327 350

His former contracted monster was a twin-headed flood dragon that lived alongside him for centuries and died one step short of transforming into a true dragon. Ji retained its Dragon Yuan and reverse scales, while its death remained a lasting source of grief for him. 291 353

Ji ultimately revealed that he had guarded China for nearly a millennium as its living Dragon Vein. After using his soul to strike enemies beyond China’s borders, his accumulated age caught up with him. He passed his responsibility and the Dragon Snake Umbrella to Lu Yibai, then died after preparing his own coffin and farewell. 387 390 392 393

Appearance

Ji normally maintained the appearance of a well-groomed middle-aged man despite his true age. His carefully preserved youthfulness contrasted sharply with the weathered quality of his eyes and his eventual rapid aging. 5 273 392

  • Usually wears a dark-blue three-piece suit, sometimes with subtle stripes. 5
  • Carries large black umbrellas, especially the Dragon Snake Umbrella. 5 203
  • Walks with quick, small, mincing steps that become characteristic of his use of Instant Step. 5 346
  • Has unusually youthful black hair and skin for most of the story; he is notably fond of expensive facial masks and skincare. 273 392
  • Develops silver hair, wrinkles, and a frail elderly appearance after his cross-border soul expedition. 392

Personality

Ji is outwardly gentle, agreeable, and sociable. He treats Night Watchmen subordinates as equals, chats casually with them, and is patient with children such as Xiao Yao and Han Shanshan. 13 203 229

He is also flamboyant, playful, and habitually evasive. Ji enjoys showing off his techniques, telling implausible stories about his past, making awkward jokes, and deflecting serious questions with humor. 5 98 153 271

Beneath this behavior, Ji is deeply protective. He watches over ordinary people, his disciples, and the Answer Bar’s weakest members with equal seriousness. The deaths of his dragon companion and the mute Sword King reveal the loneliness and grief he normally conceals. 291 351 390
