Government and Society

Chu Kingdom originally operated as a cultivation empire rather than a mortal dynasty. The three major sects—Danyang Sect, Backing Mountain Sect, and Tianling Sect—maintained order, while cultivation families and rogue cultivators formed overlapping local power networks 324 403.

At the highest level, the kingdom was protected by five Celestial Venerables: East Pole, Life, Profound Earth, Northern Dipper, and Pill Aura. Their presence restrained conflict among the kingdom's Nascent Soul cultivators, who were regarded as the practical rulers of Chu Kingdom 409.

The social order was sharply stratified. Mortals generally had little influence over cultivator affairs, but awakening a Spiritual Root could elevate a person into the cultivation class 324.

Population and Resources

• Chu Kingdom's population was estimated at no fewer than two trillion before the major wars 425.
• After the Demon Race catastrophe, its population recovered to five hundred billion within a century through policies encouraging childbirth 481.
• Spirit Root Nurturing Pills were mass-produced after the invasion to increase the number of cultivators; Grade 1 pills had a one-in-a-thousand success rate, while Grade 5 pills guaranteed Spiritual Root awakening 481.

History

Chu Kingdom faced recurrent internal instability from demonic-cultivator activity and conflict with Yue Kingdom. Demonic cultivators from Yue Kingdom infiltrated its territory, prompting large-scale arrests, sect purges, and accusations that certain cultivation families had colluded with invaders 201 207 208.

A full-scale war with the Demon Race of the Hundred Thousand Great Mountains nearly destroyed the kingdom. While the Human Race's Spirit Transformation cultivators were trapped or occupied in a Secret Realm, Demon Race forces seized frontline territories and massacred cultivators and civilians. Most high-level human cultivators fled, leaving lower-level cultivators and mortals unable to escape 443 459 460.

The return of Human Race Spirit Transformation cultivators saved Chu Kingdom from immediate collapse, but the Demon Race retained half its territory. The Chu Capital was devastated after a siege involving more than two hundred Nascent Soul Demon Race cultivators and tens of thousands of Golden Core cultivators 466 469 470.

Following the war, surviving Nascent Soul cultivators redistributed territory and resources. Chu Kingdom slowly recovered, only to face renewed pressure from the East Sea Dragon Palace and Sea Race. The Sea Race eventually withdrew from the eastern front, leaving Chu Kingdom in a fragile ceasefire while it redirected its campaign toward Wu and Yue Kingdoms 470 472 480.

The Lu Family later seized control of the kingdom through war against Tianling Sect and East Pole Celestial Venerable's faction. It became the dominant power in Chu Kingdom, though its consolidation was accompanied by purges, propaganda campaigns, and conflict with neighboring states 565 590.

A century after Lu Xuanji's disappearance during his conflict with Cang Jiu, outside cultivators massacred Chu Kingdom's mortals and cultivators alike. The destruction violated the customary restraint against slaughtering lower-level cultivators and mortals; only a minority of Lu Family elites survived in hiding 694.

External Relations

• Hundred Thousand Great Mountains / Demon Race — Long-standing enemy. Demon Race invasions repeatedly occupied Chu Kingdom territory and caused widespread massacres 443 459.
• East Sea Dragon Palace / Sea Race — Threatened Chu Kingdom after defeating Divine Water Palace; later withdrew from the eastern front and targeted Wu and Yue Kingdoms instead 472 480.
• Wu Kingdom — A family-dominated neighboring state. Relations deteriorated into frontier conflicts, and Lu Xuanji later regarded it as a lesser threat due to its limited number of Spirit Transformation cultivators 568.
• Yue Kingdom — A demonic-cultivator state. It was historically hostile to Chu Kingdom, though later relations were described as comparatively stable 201 568.
• Jin Kingdom — Received tribute from Chu Kingdom while the Lu Family ruled; the Lu Family later invaded and conquered it 665 667.
