Guard Camp Recruitment

Mo Hu arrived from the border as General Sun's representative to select personal guards from Colonel Wang's soldiers. He set the standards clearly: lifting a two-hundred-jin stone wheel qualified a soldier for training, while lifting three hundred jin earned direct entry into the Guard Camp. He disregarded attempts to delay the assessment and prioritized General Sun's orders. 11

After Chen Mo lifted the three-hundred-jin stone wheel, Mo Hu accepted him directly into the Guard Camp. Rather than maintain a superior's distance, he introduced himself as “Fifth Brother,” treated Chen Mo as a fellow soldier, and gave him the five-tael settlement payment intended for direct recruits. 12 13

At the Guard Camp, Mo Hu guided Chen Mo through the camp's rules, benefits, and organization. Other guards greeted Mo Hu warmly at the gate, indicating that he held recognized standing within the camp; he also led the training of Chen Mo and the other new guards. 17

Mo Dao's Death

Mo Hu's elder blood brother, Mo Dao, was killed by a purple-robed Daoist of the Du Tian Dao Sect while protecting him during a return journey. Mo Hu was left stunned and grief-stricken, but his hatred for the killer was unmistakable. 43

Chen Mo funded Mo Dao's coffin and preservation arrangements, while Mo Hu departed to return his brother's body to their hometown for burial. Mo Hu expressed deep gratitude for Chen Mo's help. 44

Tax Inspector and Revenge

After attaining the juren title, Mo Hu was appointed Prefectural Tax Inspector, a seventh-rank post responsible for policing tax evasion and smuggling along routes near Xingyuan Prefecture. He used intelligence from a fellow examination candidate to investigate suspected Du Tian Dao Sect transport activity, hoping to locate the purple-robed Daoist who killed Mo Dao. 72

Mo Hu did not intend to confront the Daoist alone; he asked Chen Mo to intervene if he found the target and could not handle the danger. Chen Mo agreed, and the two established a private pact to avenge Mo Dao. 72

During their ambush of a secluded route used to bypass the Taxation Office, Mo Hu recognized the purple-robed Daoist as his brother's killer. Chen Mo defeated and killed the Daoist before Mo Hu could sacrifice himself in the attempt. 76 77

Following the battle, Mo Hu and Chen Mo burned the Du Tian Dao Sect bodies to prevent reanimation. Mo Hu kept the Daoist's skull for mourning, finally achieving vengeance for Mo Dao. 78

Continued Service

Mo Hu later joined Chen Mo in escorting eighty important prisoners under heavy military protection. He remained cautious when warned that Qi Refiners might attack the convoy and withdrew from a private discussion when Chen Mo sought information beyond his strength and authority. 102 104

By this time, the Spirit Gathering Blood Nourishing Pill had helped him cultivate his first wisp of inner energy. 102

When Mo Hu learned that Chen Mo had reached the Acquired Realm, he felt shock but no jealousy. He accepted the vast difference between their abilities and resolved to cultivate diligently so he could support his sworn brother. 126
