History

Sun Shouren returned to Xingyuan Prefecture as its garrison commander after years in the border army. He had spent much of the first two months after his transfer handling visits and banquets, but still personally hosted and assessed the guards under his command. He noticed Chen Mo because the newly recruited guard earned top marks in both evaluations despite having no prior martial training. 19

He taught Chen Mo, Mo Hu, and another guard the Greedy Wolf Seven Kill Fist, a lethal military technique intended to strengthen soldiers quickly. Although he promoted the technique's battlefield value, he repeatedly warned its practitioners to stop and seek help if blood and qi circulation became obstructed. His caution stemmed partly from having lost more than three hundred personal guards in a previous border battle. 20

By Chapter 27, Sun had accepted Chen Mo as an adopted son. He supported Chen Mo's effort to redeem Zhao Yu by writing an introduction to the Beihe County Commandant, providing travel funds, and stressing that Chen Mo should establish a proper home for his future wife. 27 30 He later became increasingly invested in Chen Mo's advancement, teaching him the Five Elements Yuan Nurturing Skill, arranging examination preparation, preserving his military merits for future office, and introducing him to his own cultivation-world contacts. 45 47 51 87

When Qing Province's instability and the Du Tian Dao Sect became a threat, Sun directed reconnaissance missions, led elite troops against bandits, explained the nature of Qi Refiners and Ruin Realms to Chen Mo, and deployed his adopted son to rescue the other members of the family. 35 42 44 He later commanded four hundred personal guards and eight hundred battle soldiers during the campaign against the Grand Heaven Dao. 91

Following the suppression campaign, Sun received the hereditary title Baron of An'ye County for past military service and the successful suppression of rebellion. 95 Emperor Anle Zhao Huai Li subsequently offered him a Mystic Passage Pill and named him commander-in-chief of the South Guard City Imperial Guards, a promotion later confirmed at Rank 4a. 123 128

Sun eventually broke through to the Acquired Realm. 136 His later service earned him elevation to Count of An'ye County and the post of General Who Guards the West. 166
