Confrontation at the Church Entrance

The Dawn Church had no fixed day of worship, so there was no need to wait for the weekend to attend worship.

The Dawn Church in Randall River Valley was somewhat larger than the one in Tobesk, though its interior furnishings were comparatively old. Shade and Luvia were unfamiliar faces in this parish, but it was not uncommon for believers from elsewhere to make a special pilgrimage to a church in a major city, so no one investigated their identities.

Shade had missed that morning's service, so he sat alone on a pew in the auditorium and prayed by himself. The entire process was rather simple. After all, in a world where true gods existed, churches had no need to rely on cumbersome and meaningless rituals to prove divine majesty.

Still, the final part of worship required confessing one's recent mistakes. Shade thought for a long while but had no idea what sins he ought to confess. In the end, he admitted that he had recently been somewhat too harsh on Mia, causing the cat, who was very frightened of any environment outside the home, to go out far more often than she had last year.

After finishing worship, there was still some time before nine o'clock. Luvia had originally wanted to tour the local church with Shade, but Shade thought of something else:

"After this year's exams ended, you and Dorothy both left immediately. Priest Augustus told us something then. He had come to Randall River Valley in his youth and lost a ten-pence bet to Father Murphy of the local church, a debt he had never repaid. Since we're here today, why not visit Father Murphy and settle Priest Augustus's debt for him? Then, when we return to Tobesk, we can give Father Augustus a surprise."

Shade suggested.
