At the entrance to the town, Shade took out the Red Butterfly Pendant. It trembled slowly in his palm, then, as though it had turned into a living butterfly, flapped its wings, left his hand, and flew southwest into the town.
In the fog, the red butterfly trailed a dazzling Red Light Streak, allowing Shade and the Doctor to follow behind it and see the path clearly indicated by the red glow. But just as they entered the town, the night sky changed.
White Fog blanketed the sky above the island, reducing visibility to its lowest point. Neither Moon nor stars could be seen here, but when the Doctor looked up, he and Shade both clearly saw pale green things falling from high above.
"Evil spirits." the Doctor said softly. Shade nodded.
"The space is unstable. This is the projection of dead souls that the twin girls in the inn mentioned earlier."
The spatial chaos on Green Lake Central Island was even more severe than in the surrounding areas. Therefore, what happened here had not necessarily happened in the city yet, but it would undoubtedly affect the two men's advance.
