Shade knew he had found the right place.

The chain outside the broom closet hung loose. It seemed someone had already opened it, but the door was tightly shut. Shade gave it a tug, and the flimsy wooden door immediately opened a crack.

He instinctively reached for the revolver at his waist, hesitated, and instead touched the Rhodes Cards in his pocket. This was a school, after all. Shade did not want to make too much noise by firing a gun. Besides, bullets could not turn corners, but his Rhodes Cards could even trace a pentagram through the air.

After looking around, Shade slipped into the broom closet while no one was paying attention. Perhaps because mops were often put away before they had dried, the fairly spacious interior was damp. Its overall size was roughly the same as the walk-in closet at Shade's home.

But if there really was a mechanism, it would certainly make a great deal of noise. So Shade used a simpler method:
