Background / History

The furnace first manifests within Mo Chuan after he returns to his bedroom from the Chen family ancestral hall. Through internal vision, he finds the burner and a stack of painted skins inside himself. He concludes that the furnace’s main body had been the incense burner in the Chen ancestral hall, where it mistakenly targeted his soul during a sacrifice and recognized him as its master. 2

Its initial inscription states that it can intercept ownerless incense offerings, but that such offerings carry prophecies: anyone who partakes must resolve the associated obsessions and calamities. After Mo Chuan resolves the Chen family’s immediate disaster, their ancestral rite supplies him with incense power, strengthens him, and lets him remain in the other realm by consuming the offerings. 2

Mo Chuan gradually discovers that the furnace does not simply seize all ownerless offerings. It filters incense, retaining pure essence for conversion into Primordial Qi; later observations indicate that pure willpower is required to trigger interception. Its affinity for obsession-laden incense also distinguishes it from conventional incense cultivation, whose practitioners must avoid harmful offerings. 29 31 164

The furnace’s apparent scale changes after Mo Chuan absorbs a miniature stone palace from beneath a Shi Gandang. Empowered by earth-vein energy, the furnace grows to contain the palace complex, including the Spirit Nurturing Hall and numerous empty halls. Mo Chuan finds the Heavenly Demon Daoist’s Yin Talisman Demonic Wheel inheritance within this internal palace. 63 65

The Masterless Daoist later enters the furnace while pursuing Mo Chuan. Although the intruder does not cross into Mo Chuan’s original world, the event damages the internal palace and destroys the original Spirit Nurturing Hall. 165

Mo Chuan later determines that the furnace cannot be refined through the Golden Jade Submersion Technique or made to resonate with any of the Five Elements. He therefore judges it to be an artificially sustained, non-five-element state and at least a Spiritual Artifact. 188

Its origin becomes increasingly uncertain after Mo Chuan questions whether it is truly A Chou’s artifact. Although he can operate it instinctively, he considers the possibility that it belonged to another being, or that his own connection to A Chou merely permits its use. 486 487

In its external form, the Sacrificial Dao Furnace is a double-eared, three-legged incense burner. Its interior is a separate, expanding void that contains a celestial-round-and-terrestrial-square palace complex and, later, a broad artificial landscape. 2 65 406
