Background / History

Huang Buyu gained sentience at approximately nine years old and learned human speech by wandering among human homes. He later attended private school, then encountered the Four Great Gates immortals while a spirit medium was treating a frightened child. He joined their hall and remained affiliated with it for twenty years. 61

After a Willow Immortal of the hall was discovered during a farmhouse renovation and killed, the hall dissolved. Huang Buyu used his experience to find a secular disciple, gather several spirit monsters, and establish his own Chuma Immortal hall. Over the following years, other immortals in the hall were killed by humans or rival spirit monsters, while Huang Buyu survived and eventually became a notable great demon around Qingshui County. 61

Before meeting Mo Chuan, Huang Buyu attempted and failed to seek human form. His fear of the Netherworld Underworld led him to spare the Chen family after Mo Chuan convinced him that he came from there. In gratitude, Huang Buyu offered a Painted Skin and was warned to repent. 1 28

Frightened by the subdual of the Headless Ghost and the death of Fox Immortal Bai Niang, Huang Buyu sought Mo Chuan's guidance. He accepted an assignment to investigate Chong Shizi, found the fruit tree indicated by Mo Chuan, and discovered the Nabo beneath it. He concealed the artifact's existence while continuing the investigation. 28 29

After reporting Chong Shizi's background, Huang Buyu explained the dangerous method by which spirit monsters usually seek human form. Mo Chuan instead prophesied that he could become human, transforming him without requiring him to seize human fortune. 33

Appearance

In his true form, Huang Buyu is a slender yellowish-brown weasel spirit. His human form is that of a handsome, clear-featured young man. 29 33

He is ambitious enough to seek immortal opportunities, conceal the Nabo, and propose an organized network of spirit subordinates for Shoushan. However, he is not reckless: he reports uncertain discoveries rather than overreaching, avoids alerting potentially dangerous Daoists, and recognizes when a situation exceeds a demon's ability to investigate. 29 61 107 217
