The Scariest Thing Isn't What You Want to Do, but What I Think You Want to Do
This was a dinner that looked rather romantic.
The restaurant had an elegant ambiance, and people were talking quietly. Apart from the piano music, the only other sounds were the soft rustling of cutlery against dishes – cutting things with cutlery was an unavoidable sound, even though everyone tried their best to minimize it.
Even when sitting in the hall, this environment gives one a natural sense of separation from other dining tables.
Each table is a small space, only big enough to accommodate the person sitting at the table.
The flower petals on the table, the red tablecloth, and some exquisite tableware created a romantic atmosphere even without Lin Qi making any overly deliberate arrangements.
Perhaps it's because of the flower petals, or perhaps it's because of the environment, but most of the people dining here are young couples.
Before the chefs finished heating up their food, Lin Qi chatted about the work situation.
Sometimes women seem easy to talk to, but they still have some inner convictions, and at the same time, there is something about them that is hard to fathom, and they themselves don't even know why they are like this or that.
Therefore, the core theme cannot be omitted. Lin Qi invited Vera to dinner with the theme of work. If he did not mention these things, Vera would feel uncomfortable and start overthinking. But if he did mention them, the other things would become embellishments to a wonderful dinner.
"You know, I've been busy with my new job lately..." Lin Qi unfolded his napkin, smiled, and said that a handsome person's smile is always pleasing to the eye, just as a beautiful person's smile is always mesmerizing.
Lin Qi is a handsome man, and his good looks are his most important asset. In fact, for him, being handsome or ugly is not an obstacle to his rise to the top, but being handsome makes the process easier.
Just like now, a handsome young man invites a woman who is having a cold war with her husband to dinner. The atmosphere is somewhat ambiguous, and the woman may enjoy this somewhat dangerous sweetness with a slightly tipsy expression.
But if Lin Qi were an ugly guy, let alone an ambiguous atmosphere, she probably wouldn't even answer Lin Qi's calls.
Vera looked at Lin Qi's face and nodded. "You told me that you have some plans for a new company."
"Yes, I did say that..." His voice seemed to have a magical quality, allowing people to feel his inner joy through his voice—a very special skill.
Facial expressions, eye contact, and voice can send out enough misleading signals to make people feel that he is happy. People will subconsciously lower their guard when faced with something pleasant, and this applies not only to humans but also to animals.
"I plan to establish a large company that covers the entire state, and the company will be fully established by the second half of this year or the beginning of next year at the latest."
Lin Qi had only spoken halfway when a waiter stood by the table after apologizing, and Lin Qi stopped what he was saying.
The waiter, carrying a bottle of red wine, bowed slightly. "Excuse me, madam and sir, this is the wine you've chosen." He showed the label. "Would you like to open it now?"
Vera touched her cheek, smiling without blaming, and said, "I didn't know you also wanted red wine."
"If you don't like it, we can have something else, juice or a soft drink?" Lin Qi changed his choice decisively, which made Vera embarrassed to say no. She just said it was okay, which meant that the drinks served with dinner contained alcohol.
Of course, she also trusted Lin Qi. She didn't think Lin Qi would do anything excessive to her. Sometimes, having a handsome face is really enviable.
After smelling the oak cork, observing the wine's lees, and sensing the changes in aroma and astringency, Lin Qi picked up the bottle of red wine that had been aged for ten years.
After the waiter had walked away, he smiled and said, "Actually, I don't really like drinking red wine. Its taste..." He shrugged, which made Vera laugh.
"If you don't like it, why did you order a bottle of burgundy?" Vera probably didn't even know why she asked such a question, or what answer she wanted.
Lin Qi picked up the wine bottle and poured some wine into Vera's glass, taking over the job that should have been done by the waiter. As he poured, he said, "I thought you would like it. I've read some books that say ladies like red wine, don't they?"
His answer was surprising, effectively cutting off Vera's attempt to press for more information. If she were to ask why he was reading these books, the answer would likely be embarrassing for everyone.
However, without her pressing for answers and without Lin Qi giving a definite answer, she would start to overthink. Even if she didn't show it, she would still overthink when the alcohol started to take effect after the meal.
Why would a handsome young man need to please himself? He would give himself a forced and reasonable reason according to his own needs, and then secretly rejoice and enjoy the atmosphere.
She would even tell herself that it was Lin Qi's decision to pursue her, but she wouldn't agree to be with him, so it wouldn't be considered betrayal or infidelity. She couldn't stop someone else's freedom because of her own thoughts, even if that was completely different from the truth.
Women's thoughts are sometimes contradictory, and men are sometimes even more contradictory.
Vera's light makeup could no longer conceal her flushed cheeks; that alluring blush gave her a hazy beauty, and her aura became even more fragrant.
"...The company I'm setting up this time will have a dedicated accounting department. I don't really trust anyone else, so I hope you can take charge of this department." Lin Qi put the red wine into a wine barrel with some ice. The temperature was too high now, so the restaurant had prepared special wine barrels.
The water from the melting ice won't come into direct contact with the bottle, and the bottle itself won't come into direct contact with the ice either. This prevents the bottle from getting too cold and keeps it at a very suitable drinking temperature.
When the conversation turned to work, Vera's expression became more serious, and she seemed somewhat insecure. "I've never done this kind of work before. Maybe you should find someone who is professional enough to do it. I can assist him/her/it."
Lin Qi looked into her eyes and shook his head. "I don't trust anyone else, I only trust you."
Being needed is definitely a wonderful thing, Vera's eyes softened a little, and her voice became even gentler than before, "I'll keep an eye on things for you..."
"I insist!" Lin Qi looked at her. "I'm not afraid you'll make a mistake, I'm not afraid of any losses. This department is yours. Let's settle this."
She nodded somewhat helplessly. "I will do my best. Please don't blame me if I mess things up."
Lin Qi smiled but didn't speak. He paused for about ten seconds, allowing Vera time to fully understand, accept, and process this information before continuing, "The new job might be quite busy. I'll be working with several companies, which might take up some of your extra time. If..."
Vera pursed her lips and interrupted Lin Qi, "I'll help you, don't worry!"
Once you have a sense of responsibility and mission, a mysterious force will flow into your body, giving you something called fighting spirit, which can create many miracles.
Next, Lin Qi discussed some work-related details, and the cooks finally finished preparing their dinner and brought it up.
A sumptuous dinner, exquisite tableware, an elegant environment, and dazzling lights—no wonder people always yearn for wealth, because true happiness lies hidden within it.
The meal lasted for a while. Around 9 p. m., Lin Qi drove Vera back to the community where she lived. He originally wanted to take Vera home, but in the end, he stopped outside the community.
According to Lin Qi, if her husband saw his wife returning home in a car driven by a young man, he might get angry, which would affect their relationship.
So Lin Qi, being a kind person, only parked the car outside the community gate, saying that this would allow Vera to dissipate the smell of alcohol.
Vera was deeply moved by Lin Qi's thoughtfulness and consideration. After saying goodbye to Lin Qi, she happily carried her bag and headed home.
