Background

Imperial rule and domestic conditions

The Aurora Empire was East Divine Continent's foremost military power, built around strict laws, universal conscription, centralized authority, and military formations integrated with modern weapons 245 546 618. Its military discipline was severe enough that disobeying orders could result in execution and lasting punishment for an offender's family 546.

The Emperor's personal prestige was essential to the empire's stability. His authority upheld the harsh legal system, suppressed domestic contradictions, and kept the Cabinet and military under control 478 640 673. This structure made the empire exceptionally efficient in war, but left it vulnerable if its ruler's authority were broken 245 478.

Under Audun, the empire expanded rapidly. In less than forty years, it annexed more than a dozen states and nearly doubled its territory 634. Its thirty-six territories were held together by the imperial center and the Emperor's reputation rather than a durable balance of institutions 639 735.

Military power

The Aurora Empire's battlefield doctrine centered on large-scale Battle Formations. Its forces could combine formations, firearms, artillery, and elite martial artists into a cohesive military force that other East Divine Continent states struggled to match 310 546 622.

The empire's emphasis on obedient mass forces came at the expense of independent top experts. Despite its immense size and military dominance, it had comparatively few Level 9 experts because its high-pressure system struggled to secure their genuine loyalty 439 546.

History

Early expansion and conflict with Xia

The Aurora Empire invaded Xia through Wu River Port approximately fifteen years before the later Xia–Aurora war, causing more than 40,000 deaths in Xia Ya 237. It continued to pressure Xia through border conflicts, military deployments, and privileged treatment for Auroran citizens within Xia 14 16.

Fourteen years before the events of Chapter 310, Aurora used blitzkrieg tactics to destroy Han Guang and Na Fan within a month before turning toward Xia 310. Intervention by Red Flame Country and the Knight Alliance limited its advance, but Aurora retained territorial gains and later fully absorbed Han Guang and Na Fan 237 310.

The empire also intervened covertly in neighboring states. It supported Regent Yule during Ao Ao Kingdom's civil war in an attempt to control the country and use it as a southern route for a two-pronged invasion of Xia 355 414.

Invasion of Xia

Auroran officials anticipated a new war with Xia and attempted to recruit Baili Qingfeng, warning that Xia could not withstand the empire's military formations 340 341. The empire's Berserker Legion later invaded Xia territory near Black Forest Fortress, prompting Xia's counterattack 470.

Xia's First Army Group destroyed Aurora's First Armored Division, retook Black Forest Fortress, and defeated the Berserker Legion 470. Though the empire remained vastly stronger on paper, the setback exposed the limits of its expansion and intensified the wider conflict 478.

Heavenly Que Mountain Plan

Audun's Heavenly Que Mountain Plan sought to use a Space Channel in Xia as a sacrifice to trigger another channel's premature opening 593. The resulting Cavemen assault was intended to devastate Xia, weaken Red Flame Country, and give Aurora an opening to expand across East Divine Continent 611 635.

The plan initially sent the Sacred Sword Legion and Dragon Scale Legion—220,000 elite troops—toward Xia under the guise of assisting against the Cavemen 601 608. Instead, Xia defeated the Cavemen force ahead of them, and the retreating Cavemen turned on Aurora's legions after discovering the deception 608.

Aurora suffered catastrophic losses at Heavenly Que Mountain: roughly 800,000 troops were buried in the campaign, including losses from its two elite legions, later Cavemen attacks, and the defense of Silent Fortress 641. The empire responded with nationwide conscription and built new defensive lines, but Audun's plan to unify East Divine Continent had failed 615 616.

Fall of Audun

After confronting Audun in North Star City, Baili Qingfeng learned that the Emperor had personally orchestrated the Heavenly Que Mountain Plan and intended to continue Aurora's expansion 633 635. Baili initially sought an apology, compensation for victims, and an end to aggression; Audun refused 635.

Reports of Audun's death first prompted Xia to plan a controlled transition using a body double, Oya, to prevent the empire from splintering into civil war 639 640. Audun later recovered, removed the Mental Seed Bai Li Qingfeng had placed in him, and publicly challenged Bai Li Qingfeng to a decisive duel 655 664 665.

Audun gathered forty-one Star Pillar members and formed the Great Emperor Sword Art's sword formation in North Star City's Royal Garden 666 667. Baili Qingfeng ultimately destroyed Audun's final attack, killed him, and eliminated the loyalists who tried to avenge the Emperor 670.

Integration and transformation

Audun's confirmed death left the empire leaderless and at risk of collapse. Xia personnel, including Zhang Xingsheng, Duanmu Rui, Prime Minister Yasso, and Shou Zhen, moved to stabilize North Star City and bring the empire's territories under control 672 673.

Xia initially controlled North Star City and twelve surrounding territories, while other territories remained unstable or vulnerable to foreign intervention 673 675. The existing harsh legal system was temporarily retained because its collapse would have accelerated disorder 673.

Propaganda portraying Baili Qingfeng as the Void Devil God helped establish a replacement source of authority within the former empire 674 675. The Void Divine Hall gradually consolidated control, and the empire was eventually described as having become the Void Divine Hall Theocracy 897 1132.
