Background / History
Kano is the only son of the Kano family and a prominent figure in Valuana high society. By the time Rorschach arrives in Valuana, Kano has recently become Chief Professor of the Tower of Stars and holds positions in the Arcane Council, Alchemy Council, and Owl Court. His standing gives him considerable influence within both the Tower and the Mage Guild. 30
As Chief Professor, Kano accepts Rorschach into the Tower of Stars, first offering him a teaching-assistant position and then guiding him through the Tower’s facilities and research environment. He becomes Rorschach’s principal mentor in magical theory, magic-circle design, Guild politics, and large-scale research. 32 33 34
Kano initially views the Imperial Royal Magic Academy’s practical, efficiency-focused curriculum with disdain, but Rorschach’s ideas and the growth of the Alchemy Department gradually influence his outlook. He comes to support the circulation of magical knowledge, cooperation with secular education, and the Guild’s integration with industry rather than continued dependence on feudal nobility. 34 211 224 267
Appearance
Kano is described as a well-connected but “not exactly handsome” Valuan gentleman. He commonly wears Mage Robes, including distinctive red robes when acting in an official capacity. 30 163
- Carries a red Mage Emblem containing an Arcane Seal. 70
- Has notably small eyes. 119
- Uses gemstones and crystals as expendable aids for rapid spellcasting. 157
Personality
Kano is witty, eloquent, sociable, and unusually active in Valuana’s elite circles for an Archmage. He attends late-night banquets and card games, sleeps late, and treats brunch as part of his daily routine. 41 56
He is also teasing and irreverent with his students, frequently needling Rorschach, Pascal, and Paulina. Beneath that casual manner, he is protective of them: he provides Rorschach with opportunities and political cover, disciplines Pascal without abandoning him, and prepares both students to face hostile Guild inquiries. 65 104 224
Kano is politically pragmatic but driven by a long-term ideal for the Mage Guild. He believes its monopoly over magic is no longer sustainable and argues that Mages must adapt to a world where non-magical knowledge, industry, and public education can transform society. 224 267
Abilities & Skills
Ninth Circle Magic: *Time Stop*
Kano can cast the Ninth Circle Transmutation spell Time Stop, accelerating himself to the point that the outside world appears motionless. He used it to briefly detach from ordinary reality and cross into the Astral Realm. 454
- Reached the Astral Realm beyond the Transmutation Dust Layer Flow. 454
- Observed the Crystal Wall, the End of the Stars, and the Law Tree—the source of spells and repository of archetypes. 454
- Detected the formation of a probable Tenth Circle necromantic spell through a distant branch of the Law Tree. 454
- His initial Astral transit was extremely brief and dangerous; the ground station prepared a forced recall after contact was lost. 454
Spatial Magic and Teleportation
Kano is regarded as the Tower of Stars’ foremost spatial mage. He possesses extensive knowledge of Teleportation Arrays, portals, and the restrictions governing their use. 101 453
- Opened a portal to dispose of a defeated abomination during the theater incident. 113
- Used and maintained access to Mage Guild teleportation infrastructure. 101 163
- Led research into cross-plane teleportation and methods of reaching the Astral Realm. 135 451
- Prepared to travel to the Astral Realm through a Floating Pod supported by a ground station. 453
Magic-Circle Theory
Kano is an expert in magic circles and teaches the relationship between spell structures and magic-circle design. His research includes the “Spell-Magic Circle Perfect Realization Hypothesis.” 110
- Assesses and critiques spell arrays, including Rorschach’s early Blue Light Barrier design. 119
- Developed aether conversion and output technology within the Kano research group to support high-output magic and cross-plane teleportation. 135
- Coordinated a Tower-wide spell broadcast through Starlight Torch Tower’s reactor and antenna system. 225
Arcane Observation and Guild Reform
After reaching the Astral Realm, Kano concludes that observing high-level activity on the Law Tree could provide early warning for dangerous magic. He proposes a long-term observation institution as a foundation for the Mage Guild’s survival in a changing era. 454 474
- Advocates monitoring high-circle spell activity rather than attempting to control all low-circle casting. 474
- Supports the adoption of String Magic to reduce the Mother Goddess’s influence on spell chains. 634
- Favors expanding magical education and aligning the Guild with industry, merchants, and secular institutions. 224 267
Combat and Defensive Spellcraft
Kano can protect allies, respond to magical threats, and deploy large-scale spells under pressure. 113 225
- Cast a protective effect over Rorschach before confronting an abomination. 113
- Helped Rorschach eliminate one abomination and preserve another as evidence. 113
- Forced absent Mages using owl proxies to appear physically at a Guild inquiry by opening spatial rifts at their seats. 225
- Resisted the negative-energy corrosion of an active Transcendent Magic ritual alongside Rorschach. 459
