Doctrine and Practices

The Western Teachings originally presented itself as a path of compassion, recovery, and salvation for survivors in the west. Jieyin taught Great Vow Buddhist Dharma, urging disciples to make grand vows and transform sentient beings, while Zhunti taught Nirvana Buddhist Dharma, focused on abandoning distracting thoughts and resolving attachments and malevolent energy through cultivation 345.

Its stated mission increasingly conflicted with its documented actions:

• Distributed Heart-Cleansing Talismans during Hongjun’s sermon recesses to recruit low-cultivation beings seeking security and resources 355.
• Offered cultivation methods, spirit herbs, spirit stones, pills, and Spiritual Treasures to induce tribes and factions to convert 369 497.

History

Founding in the West

Before the sect’s formal establishment, Jieyin and Zhunti were already spreading the philosophy of “universal salvation” among western beings, prompting Bai Ze to regard their developing influence as a potential factor in the Primordial Era’s balance of power 168.

Dao Ancestor Hongjun later granted the pair a thousand-mile territory around Mount Sumeru. They spent half a month purifying the mountain’s residual Demonic Qi: Jieyin used Buddhist Dharma to cleanse malevolent spirits from the soil, while Zhunti restored the earth veins’ Spiritual Energy with his whisk 345.

The two then gathered surviving western beings, provided relief through Dharma preaching and Calming Pills, developed farmland and irrigation systems, and constructed the sect’s halls over three months. The Grand Hall of Heroes became the center of worship, marking the formal establishment of the Western Teachings 345.

Early Expansion and Growing Suspicion

The Western Teachings expanded through recruitment and material support, particularly appealing to weak cultivators seeking safety. Its foundation remained unstable, however: it lacked resources, recognition, and high-quality disciples while making promises that it might not be able to fulfill 355 358.

Concerned that rapid expansion would destabilize the Primordial Era, Laozi, the Three Pure Ones, Empress Nuwa, the Witch Clan, and other Great Powers began monitoring the sect. Lin Yue proposed strengthening emerging factions to prevent the Western Teachings from becoming dominant in the west 358 361.

The sect’s disciples soon began using coercive tactics in the Eastern Land. Su Qingyan encountered disciples pressuring the Human Clan of Green Wind Valley to abandon their home and join the Western Teachings, directly contradicting its public claim of saving all beings 369.

Conflict with the Human Clan

The Human Clan’s rapid development and rising fortune became a primary target of the Western Teachings. Jieyin and Zhunti sent disciples to Mysterious Nether Valley, claiming that conversion could free the Human Clan from suffering and reincarnation; Lin Yue exposed their intent to seize the clan’s fortune and expelled them after one disciple attempted to abduct children 427.

Further infiltration followed during the Witch-Demon War. Western Teachings agents spread its doctrines among refugees, farmers, artisans, and Human Clan cultivators, encouraging them to seek the Sages’ protection rather than rely on their own cultivation and unity 472 473 474.

The sect later allied with the Demon Clan to attack the Human Clan and expand its influence. The Human Clan and Witch Clan repelled the attack, while Jieyin and Zhunti were defeated after personally intervening against Nuwa and the Three Pure Ones 474.

Investiture of the Gods Era

During the Investiture of the Gods Calamity, the Western Teachings profited from the fall of the Intercepting Sect. Many Intercepting disciples were converted, and Jieyin and Zhunti claimed that the calamity had brought them numerous “fated ones” 540.

After the Investiture Ceremony, the sect attempted to seize Heavenly Merit and dispatched disciples throughout the Zhou Dynasty to establish a foothold in the Human Clan’s eastern heartland. Lin Yue obstructed its attempt to seize Merit and secretly limited its missionary reach by exposing false doctrines, improving local livelihoods, and altering local fortune 562.

Exposure, Defeat, and Decline

The Western Teachings continued to manipulate public opinion, including financing the Monster Extermination Alliance and spreading rumors against Yue Sheng Palace for sheltering Yao Race remnants 621. Evidence later linked the sect to covert orders, troop movements, and interference with the Primordial Era’s stability; Lin Yue publicized the evidence and summoned the major Sages to Spiritual Mountain 643.

When the sect’s schemes were displayed before all living beings, followers abandoned it in large numbers. Lin Yue’s indestructible light screen became a public monument to the Western Teachings’ actions 645.

During conflict involving Outer Realm Demonic Creatures, Jieyin, Zhunti, and their disciples attacked righteous Primordial forces amid the chaos, seeking to plunder destiny rather than oppose the external threat 650. Their prestige collapsed, Spiritual Mountain became isolated, and the Western Teachings came to be regarded as an enemy by many races 655.

The sect subsequently allied with Heavenly Demons from beyond the domain, promising Emperor Moluo half of the Spirit Vein resources of the Western Niuhe Continent in exchange for assistance against Yue Sheng Palace 674 675.

After Lin Yue reached Flawless Sagehood and Pangu returned to the early Sage stage, the Two Sages abandoned open opposition and withdrew into the Western Niuhe Continent 691. Lin Yue stationed eight Yue Sheng Palace core disciples and 24,000 elite cultivators around Spiritual Mountain, using the Eight Extremes Heaven Monitoring Array and Chaos Heaven Monitoring Mirrors to restrict the sect’s movements 692.
