Spiders were pretty disgusting, but dead, motionless spiders were about ninety percent less intimidating. So everyone took one and washed it.
Once they were done washing, everyone returned to the bonfire. Amamiya Natsuki added some firewood to rekindle the flames, and the girls sat in two groups and began roasting the spiders.
"This feels so strange..." Fujiwara Chika said eagerly as she turned a spider over. "Back at Forest School, we never roasted spiders."
Zhuzhu's little face was tense. "Neither have I."
Hayasaka Ai said, "If we'd run into spiders this big at Forest School, we'd have stayed as far away from them as possible."
Tsubame-senpai said, "This feels like a dream... though more like a nightmare. Natsuki-classmate, when are we going to 'wake up'?"
Amamiya Natsuki was roasting a spider too. He couldn't very well let everyone else roast spiders while he ate bread. He replied,
"It might take just a few hours, or it might take several days. Don't worry. Just think of it as an experience in wilderness survival."
Zhuzhu remarked,
"You'd never find spiders this big in the real world!"
"..."
A moment later.
The spiders were finally cooked. As a high-quality source of protein, they gave off a faint, roasted aroma once done, making everyone's nose twitch.
Yukinoshita Haruno said softly,
"They look ready to eat."
"I'm so hungry. My stomach's growling." Fujiwara Chika could hardly wait. "Everyone, hurry up and try some."
Zhuzhu suddenly asked in a small voice,
"Um, could the spiders be poisonous?"
Yukinoshita Yukino shook her head and calmly explained,
"Generally speaking, spider venom comes from proteins. Cooking it at high temperatures breaks down their structure, so even if they were poisonous before, they're safe now."
"It's better to be safe than sorry. We haven't roasted them for that long, either."
