Background / History

As a teenager in Shanghai, Xia murdered Mayor Wu Xiong’s family and confessed at trial. Wu’s bribery had caused the death of Xia’s six-year-old sister, after which Xia’s mother died of grief. Sentenced to life imprisonment, Xia committed suicide three days later. 8

After death, Xia awakened in the Silent Sea, the convergence of humanity’s goodwill, and identified its host as Alaya. He accepted Alaya’s invitation to become the Sea’s guardian only after securing three conditions: passage to the Fate world, permission to bring back one Heroic Spirit, and a 400-year period to grow stronger. His chosen destination was Knight King Britain, where he hoped to meet Artoria. 8

In Britain, Xia witnessed Artoria’s humiliation as a servant and killed the steward responsible. He offered her a way to leave, then lived with her in the Fairy Forest for two years, where they trained and survived among dangerous magical beasts. His fear of altering Artoria’s destined path and losing her became possessive overprotection, culminating in him nearly dying while saving her from danger. 9 12

Before Artoria’s tournament for the Sword in the Stone, Xia spent their final days together with her, then disappeared without explanation, leaving a white flower behind. Separated from the Sea of Benevolence that sustained him, he was expelled into parallel worlds and repeatedly died, reincarnated, fought, and ruled as everything from a soldier to an emperor. 14 15

Appearance

As the Returner, Xia is a tall, black-haired young man with dark, hawk-like eyes and a commanding presence. His appearance shifts with his manifestations, but he is repeatedly associated with imperial clothing, cloaks, and his dragon-patterned spear. 15 16

  • Black hair, at times falling over his eyes. 16
  • Sharp, eagle-like or hawk-like gaze. 16 35
  • Often wears a platinum cloak or imperial-style attire. 20 33
  • His later identity as Xia Er is a fair, slender fourteen-year-old boy. 38

Personality

Xia’s defining trait is his extreme devotion to Artoria. He considers her more important than his own soul and existence, and his stated purpose is to return to her side regardless of reincarnation, injury, or death. 8 15 26

This devotion is both protective and possessive. Xia forbids Artoria from taking risks, deploys guards to restrict her movements, and treats threats to her as enemies to be eliminated. He eventually acknowledges that Artoria wants strength not to reject his protection, but to protect him in return. 12 32 33

Outside his relationship with Artoria, Xia can be arrogant, ruthless, and provoking—particularly toward enemy kings. His later life as Xia Er leaves him isolated, irritable, and misanthropic due to the danger his power poses to everyone around him. 15 19 38

Abilities & Skills

Returner Physiology

Xia is not a conventional Heroic Spirit. He signed a contract with Alaya after death despite lacking legendary deeds, and identifies himself as a “Returner.” His existence has persisted through repeated resurrection and reincarnation across parallel worlds. 15 42

  • Retains knowledge and combat experience from countless lives as soldiers, generals, nobles, and emperors. 15
  • Can create a thought-form from a divided soul to continue acting after death. 34
  • His soul is heavily damaged by repeated temporal travel and soul division; after three time-traversals and one split, he cannot reliably travel through time and space again by his own power. 37

Danger Sense

A Class Skill described as near-terrifying intuition toward danger and hostile intent. 15

  • Can recognize and eliminate potential threats before a crisis develops. 15
  • Its perception is stated to reach the level of influencing “cause and effect.” 15
  • It is notably ineffective against Artoria’s anger. 15

King of Wrath

A personal skill that transforms Xia’s fury into explosive combat power. 15

  • Can increase his combat power threefold in an instant. 15
  • Normally has a low activation chance. 15
  • Activates with frightening reliability when Artoria is endangered or harmed. 15

Riding

Xia possesses Rank A Riding. 15

  • Can control most mounts beyond ordinary skill. 15
  • Can freely command beasts and holy beasts below Saint Beast rank. 15
  • Can operate modern vehicles. 15

Reality Marbles

Eternal Avalon

Xia’s domain manifests a peaceful Avalon-like paradise that is also enclosed by volcanoes, rivers of blood, and devastation. Heroic Spirits cannot advance into the apparent paradise, making it a prison as much as a sanctuary. 20 21

  • Draws all combatants in the surrounding park into Xia’s domain. 20
  • Reveals Artoria’s self-imposed memory seal and the memories she locked away. 21

Eternal Throne

Xia’s primary Reality Marble is an imperial battlefield built from his history of conquest. 15 30

  • Contains hundreds of thousands of soldiers and attacks from mythological creatures. 15
  • Its offensive torrent continues as long as the General’s Platform in the King’s Citadel remains standing. 15
  • Can turn its interior into the “Land of Death,” draining mana and exposing intruders to Xia’s Assassin Squad. 31
  • Allows Xia to summon Loyal Guards, including twenty personal guards tasked with protecting Artoria. 32

Eternal Celestial Palace

Xia can reshape the environment into a grand palace suitable for a gathering of kings. 27

Spear Techniques

Xia is a highly skilled spear fighter who can use mana manifestation and transform his spear-based attacks into overwhelming destructive force. 18 20 35

  • Fought Saber while deliberately avoiding her vital points and provoking her knightly pride. 18
  • Transformed golden energy into a colossal battle axe to counter Ea’s crimson mana attack. 35
  • Uses Lightning Spear, turning his weapon into a lightning-wreathed beam of light. 35
  • Major techniques consume enormous amounts of mana; his final attacks against the Hero King expend more than half his reserves. 35

Pure Evil Power

As Xia Er, Xia possesses a curse-derived force linked to the evil Holy Grail. 38

  • Can shatter a magus’s mental and spiritual defenses and consume their soul. 38
  • Causes ordinary people and magi to fear or avoid him. 38
  • Xia Er learns to control it well enough to prevent indiscriminate harm, though its existence still isolates him. 38
  • The power remains a source of misfortune for those around him. 40

Equipment / Weapons / Items

  • Dragon Crest Golden Spear — Xia’s spear from his first reincarnation; it has accompanied him across thousands of worlds and countless wars. Its traits are Crush and Destruction, and it can shatter an A+-rank Noble Phantasm within eight direct clashes. 15
  • Golden Crest Imperial Armor — A set forged from the beliefs of Xia’s soldiers and representing his undefeated glory. It possesses exceptional magical defense, compared to King Arthur’s Avalon; while sealed, it appears red. 15
  • White chains — Used to bind the descending Holy Grail when Xia expends his last reserves of magic. 37

Relationships

  • Artoria Pendragon / Saber — Xia’s beloved “goddess,” training partner, and central reason for surviving reincarnation. Their bond is strained by her memory seal and Xia’s possessiveness, but they ultimately affirm their mutual love and protection. 8 21 33 37
  • Alaya — The convergence of human consciousness who offers Xia guardianship of the Silent Sea and fulfills his conditions to enter the Fate world. 8
  • Beiju Kudeberu — Xia’s inexperienced Master in the Fourth Holy Grail War. They bicker constantly, but Beiju’s contract enables Xia’s summoning. 15 25
  • Kiritsugu Emiya — Einzbern’s representative, who secures Xia’s support in exchange for Saber’s aid at the Grail’s descent. Xia later helps him confront the Holy Grail’s disaster despite his resentment. 25 37
  • Gilgamesh / Hero King — A hostile rival whose arrogance and interest in Artoria provoke Xia. Xia defeats him with Lightning Spear, while regretting that Gilgamesh might have become a friend. 19 35
  • Emiya Shirou — Xia Er’s companion during the later Fuyuki events. Both attempt to protect one another when attacked by Lancer. 38 40
