History
As a teenager in Shanghai, Xia murdered Mayor Wu Xiong's family in revenge for a bribe that led to his six-year-old sister's death and his mother's death from grief. He confessed, received a life sentence and died by suicide three days later. In the sea where he awoke, he negotiated a contract with Alaya: he would enter the Fate world, bring back a Heroic Spirit and have 400 years to grow. He sought out the Britain of the future Knight King 8.
Xia met Artoria before she drew the Sword in the Stone. He took her away from the household where she had been humiliated, and they trained together in a forest. His fear for her safety repeatedly conflicted with her wish to face danger and become a knight. He disappeared as her accession approached, leaving a white flower and a promise to return 9 11 12 14.
After their separation, Xia died and returned across countless parallel worlds, taking military and ruling roles. Summoned by Beiju as a Returner in the Fourth Holy Grail War, he found Artoria again, but she did not recognize him: she had sealed her memories of him. Xia allied with Kiritsugu Emiya in exchange for Saber's help when the Grail descended. He later fought Gilgamesh, then helped Artoria confront the rampaging Grail, giving her magic and pushing her out of danger when its black mud caught him 15 17 21 25 35 37.
Ten years after the war, a boy called Xia Er lived in Fuyuki. Found unharmed in the ruins of the great fire, he had been raised by an elderly couple until they were killed during an attempted abduction. He could control the dangerous Pure Evil Power that had awakened within him, but had removed and sealed his magical core in pursuit of an ordinary life. During an encounter with Lancer at the Emiya residence, the core returned; Xia subsequently recovered his memories and identified himself as Drake D. Xia 38 40 41.
Appearance
Xia is described as a black-haired, dark-eyed young man with a sharp, hawk-like gaze. His Fourth Holy Grail War attire includes red battle clothing; his later incarnation, Xia Er, appears as a 14-year-old boy 15 16 20 35 38.

Personality
Xia is gentle, playful and openly devoted to Artoria, but his protectiveness can become controlling. He once forbade her from exploring the forest and later stationed guards to keep her inside his fortress, provoking arguments on both occasions. His fear of losing her persists even when he recognizes her strength 12 32 33.
Toward opponents he is proud and often ruthless, introducing himself to fellow kings as their superior and mocking Gilgamesh in combat. He nevertheless hesitates over the danger posed by the Grail, then chooses to help the civilians caught in its destruction 19 35 37.
