Background / History

Esdeath kills the bandits occupying a stronghold where she meets Tobiichi Origami and Asuna Yuuki. Intrigued by reports that Li Ke has seized the First Fortress, she takes the two women there, hoping he will either give her an army to command or prove a worthy opponent 322.

She breaks through the fortress guards and challenges Li Ke for his throne. He defeats her despite her use of Mahapadma, then heals her severe injuries rather than killing her. Impressed that he can overpower her, Esdeath offers to join him; Li Ke initially doubts the abrupt change in her attitude 323 324 325. He appoints her general and later gives her command of his armies to conquer the remaining fortresses 329 335.

After the Black Beast world quest, Esdeath returns to her home world and becomes its queen 607 700. She later unifies the north of another world and is recognized as Freljord’s new ruler. Even after building her own power, she continues to seek fights with Li Ke 627 632 643.

Appearance

Esdeath has long water-blue hair and wears a white military uniform 323 627.

• Her first clash with Li Ke shatters an ice covering on her face, revealing her appearance beneath it 323.
• She wears high-heeled boots during her campaign against the fortresses 334.

Personality

Esdeath seeks difficult battles and judges people chiefly by their strength and willingness to fight. She is disappointed when opponents surrender or cannot challenge her, but recognizes Chifuyu Orimura’s swordsmanship as a rare match for her own 322 341 342.

Her submission to Li Ke follows her belief that the stronger person should lead; she remains commanding and ruthless toward others. She also takes military administration seriously, controlling troops through rewards, discipline and inspections. As queen, she buys seeds and supplies for her people rather than weapons, arguing that a ruler must keep them fed and clothed 325 335 340 700.

Ice manipulation and time freeze

• Conjures swords, spikes, walls, storms and soldiers made of ice 323 343.
• Uses Mahapadma to freeze time. Its effect is weakened in the world where she first fights Li Ke, and his fire and space-time slash overcome it 324.
• Freezes the critically wounded Chifuyu Orimura to keep her alive until Li Ke can treat her 342 346.

Swordsmanship and magic

• Matches Chifuyu Orimura in close combat before either relies fully on special abilities 342.
• Learns Magic Power by watching mages and later studies physics, mathematics and magic to develop an ice–fire sword style 342 368.
• Uses a magic circle to return heat from her attacks to herself, increasing her power during combat; Li Ke disrupts the technique 368 369.

Command

• Conquers successive fortresses by recruiting defeated soldiers, distributing spoils and rewarding inspection teams that stop attacks on civilians or the hoarding of loot 340.
• Plans how plunder and supplies will support Freljord’s development, rather than treating conquest solely as a battle 632.
