History
Third Hokage era
Konoha operated as a major shinobi village under the Third Hokage, Hiruzen Sarutobi. Academy graduates were assessed by active shinobi, received forehead protectors from the Hokage, and entered the village's mission system upon graduation 3 5.
The village maintained a formal reporting structure: teams returning from external missions were expected to report directly to the Hokage before submitting written reports 38. Konoha also treated intelligence and the concealment of strategic techniques as high-priority matters; Hiruzen and Minato concealed Hyuga Kazuya's bow-and-arrow methods after the Land of Artisans mission 37 38.
Third Shinobi World War
As Kumogakure, Iwagakure, and Sunagakure mobilized near the Land of Fire, Konoha prepared for war and formed three shinobi armies. Hiruzen assigned Jiraiya, Torifu Akimichi, and Shimura Danzō as their commanders 274 280.
Konoha's forces rapidly forced Kumogakure and Iwagakure into ceasefires, while Sunagakure ultimately accepted severe surrender terms. Sunagakure surrendered mission authority, permitted Konoha control over its Ninja Academy, transferred assets and puppet techniques, and accepted Konoha troop deployments 282 283.
Minato's accession
Following the war, Hiruzen resigned and Konoha held an election for the Fourth Hokage. Minato Namikaze defeated Fugaku Uchiha and Orochimaru by an overwhelming majority 284. His inauguration drew a massive crowd at the Hokage Building and formally established him as Konoha's Fourth Hokage 286.
Separation from the Land of Fire
Minato sought financial and political autonomy from the Land of Fire's Daimyo and nobility. Their refusal led to a shadow war, with the Daimyo's faction hiring bounty hunters, rogue shinobi, and disguised foreign shinobi against Konoha 289 293.
During this conflict, Hyuga Kazuya used Memory Transfer Ninjutsu on much of Konoha's shinobi population. The technique supplied skills, experience, and ideological alignment, allowing Konoha personnel to govern regions and stabilize the Land of Fire after the Daimyo's authority collapsed 293 294.
Reorganization and unification
Konoha and the Land of Fire were renamed the Ninja World Human Revolution Alliance, commonly called the Ninja Reform Alliance. Minato's title changed from Hokage to First Supreme Executive, while Hyuga Kazuya became the Alliance's chief scientist 297.
The Alliance declared war on the Old Era Alliance of Kumogakure, Iwagakure, Sunagakure, and Kirigakure 298. The conflict ended in just over ten days after the four countries' Daimyo surrendered; remaining resisting shinobi were eliminated or confined for ideological reform 303.
Konoha was later designated a military district rather than the Alliance's core city. Kyoto became the Alliance's central city 309.

Konoha's central district consists primarily of three- to four-story modern buildings, reflecting its distinct early-modern architectural culture 6.
