Background / History
Minato recruits Hyuga Kazuya into his squad and demonstrates the Flying Thunder God Technique upon their first meeting. He then brings Kazuya to meet the grieving Hatake Kakashi, becoming Kakashi's supervising jonin as well. Though initially unsure how to reach Kakashi, Minato patiently supports him as Kazuya helps the boy find a new purpose in becoming stronger. 12
As a teacher, Minato postpones training plans when Kakashi collapses from exhaustion and intends to develop his students through combat experience, teamwork, knowledge of the shinobi world, and personal values rather than basic academy exercises they have already mastered. 14 22 He later accepts an S-rank investigation mission for the squad but delays its departure to give Kakashi time to recover from his father's death. 22
Minato, Kazuya, and Kushina investigate Rōran and the Dragon Vein. During the operation, Minato uses his Flying Thunder God seals and a Shadow Clone to help reseal the erupting Dragon Vein alongside Kushina and Kazuya. 137 144 The eruption displaces the trio twenty years into a parallel world, where Minato gathers intelligence and discovers that that world's version of himself became the Fourth Hokage before dying with Kushina during the Nine-Tails Rampage. 146 147
The alternate world's history changes Minato's priorities. He resolves to avoid that fate, protect Naruto, and seek the authority needed to reform the shinobi world. 154 162 After returning to his original timeline, he becomes more willing to hear Kazuya's opinions, including agreeing to control the defeated Anrokuzan rather than immediately execute him. 168 172
Minato later rebuilds his squad around Kakashi, Uchiha Obito, and Rin Nohara, while also taking Uchiha Shisui as a student to cultivate talented Uchiha within Konoha. 208 227 When Madara Uchiha ambushes his team and blocks his space-time ninjutsu, Minato sends his students to safety and remains behind; he is captured before Kazuya rescues him. 245 246
During the Third Shinobi World War, Minato earns the name Yellow Flash after capturing the future Fourth Raikage and Killer B and killing one hundred elite ninja in a second. His presence becomes enough to halt fighting across battlefields through fear alone. 280 He battles the Third Raikage with Flying Thunder God tactics and Sage Mode, forcing Kumogakure to withdraw despite sustaining severe injuries. 281 282
After the war, Minato organizes political support from clans and village figures, challenges Hiruzen Sarutobi's continued rule, and succeeds Hiruzen as the Fourth Hokage. 283 286 He then moves to free Konoha from the Land of Fire Daimyo's control, ultimately becoming the nominal supreme commander of a Konoha-led Land of Fire. 289 293 294 When Konoha is reorganized into the Ninja Reform Alliance, Minato accepts the title of First Supreme Executive and formally declares war on the Old Era Alliance. 297 298
Appearance
Minato is a tall young man with brilliant golden hair. He is commonly described with a gentle, warm smile that reinforces his approachable demeanor. 12
- Golden hair. 12
- Tall build. 12
- Usually carries Flying Thunder God kunai for rapid teleportation. 245
Personality
Minato is gentle, patient, and modest. He treats his students with warmth, prioritizing Kakashi's health and growth over schedules, and praises Kazuya and Kakashi when their coordinated attacks nearly catch him off guard. 14 20 Even when teaching the Flying Thunder God Technique, he stresses restraint, discretion, and a strong foundation rather than allowing his students to chase power blindly. 189
He is also deeply protective. When Madara's ambush traps his squad, Minato immediately creates an escape route for Kakashi, Obito, and Rin and stays behind alone. 245 He initially considers sacrificing himself to resolve the Dragon Vein crisis before Kazuya reminds him to use a Shadow Clone instead. 144
The parallel-world journey makes Minato more ambitious and politically forceful. Learning of his and Kushina's deaths, as well as Naruto's childhood, drives him to pursue the Hokage position and alter the future. 147 154 274 Despite this change, he remains uneasy with Kazuya's methods, questioning the ethical consequences of Memory Transfer Ninjutsu even after accepting that Kazuya's power limits his ability to oppose it. 294 297

- Uses marked kunai as teleportation anchors and combat tools. 245
- Created an opening in a space-blocking barrier to evacuate Kakashi, Obito, and Rin. 245

Rasengan
Minato uses the Great Ball Rasengan as one of his primary high-power offensive techniques. 281

Minato possesses practical barrier and sealing skills in addition to his space-time ninjutsu. 50 144
- Creates a barrier around a training ground to contain Kazuya and Jiraiya's spar. 50
