Background
Kakashi is the son of Hatake Sakumo, the White Fang of Konoha. Sakumo’s death leaves him grieving and fixated on whether missions or comrades matter more. When Minato Namikaze and Hyuga Kazuya visit him, Kazuya reframes the White Fang Incident as a failure of strength rather than a choice between duty and comradeship. Kakashi responds by asking Minato to train him so that he can surpass his father and protect both. 12
Despite his grief, Kakashi retains the pride of a prodigy. He challenges Kazuya to a spar to determine whether the older genin is worthy of being his comrade. Kakashi uses lightning-infused Hatake Style Iaido, but Kazuya evades with Substitution Technique and defeats him with Eight Trigrams Sixty-Four Palms. Kakashi’s poor condition—marked by exhaustion and disordered chakra—contributes to the defeat. 13 14
Appearance
Kakashi is a silver- or white-haired shinobi who habitually conceals much of his face behind a black mask.
- White hair and a black face mask from his first appearance. 12
- Later wears a black fitted combat suit beneath a green jōnin vest. 166
- Covers his left eye with his forehead protector during his jōnin period. 166
- Carries a short sword for Hatake clan swordsmanship. 13
Personality
Kakashi begins as cold, withdrawn, and deeply affected by his father’s death. His answer to that loss is not resignation, but an intense drive to become stronger than Sakumo. He initially judges others by strength and is openly dismissive of Kazuya’s lower rank and later graduation. 12 13
His defeat by Kazuya changes his attitude into one of respect and disciplined rivalry. He openly calls Kazuya his senior because of the gap in their strength, discusses combat roles before team exercises, and eagerly absorbs taijutsu advice. 19 20
Kakashi’s ambition can also become anxiety. Being compared with Kazuya and confronted with increasingly powerful enemies leaves him feeling inadequate, which prevents him from calming his mind enough to begin Sage Mode training. He nevertheless seeks help rather than giving up. 31 262
Abilities & Skills
Hatake Style Swordsmanship
Kakashi’s foundational combat style is the Hatake clan’s close-range swordsmanship.
- Uses a short sword in combat and channels chakra through its blade. 13 19
- Employs Hatake Style Swordsmanship: Iaido, drawing and striking with lightning-infused speed. 13
- Describes his core strengths as close combat, speed, and Chakra Blade Technique. 19
- Exchanges taijutsu knowledge with Kazuya, contributing Hatake Sakumo’s teachings while learning from Hyuga combat principles. 20
Lightning Style Nintaijutsu
Following Kazuya’s advice, Kakashi develops Lightning Style as an enhancement to his speed-oriented sword style.
- Lightning Style was recommended because it complements his swordsmanship and boosts his base speed and strength. 105
- Stimulates his cells with Lightning Style chakra to accelerate his movement and increase the force of his sword strikes. 262
- Can maintain high-speed exchanges with Minato during sparring, though prolonged combat exhausts him. 262
Flying Thunder God Technique
Kakashi trains under Minato to learn the Fourth Hokage’s space-time ninjutsu.
- Receives an S-rank mission from Tsunade requiring him to master the technique within three months. 166
- Begins formal instruction alongside Kazuya, though Minato recognizes that it is initially more difficult and less immediately useful for Kakashi than further sword training. 189 190
- Uses Flying Thunder God movement during sparring with Minato, teleporting behind him for a sword strike. 262
- Has mastered the technique by the time Minato’s squad departs for the front lines. 275
Life Breath Technique
Kakashi quickly learns Kazuya’s breathing technique to address the strain caused by excessive training.
- Restores energy, heals injuries, and repairs hidden physical damage. 105
- Masters the technique after only a few practice rounds. 105
- Draws in natural energy at an assessed rate of roughly twelve percent, allowing him to perceive the surrounding world with unusual calm and clarity. 105
Temple of Fire Sage Mode
Kakashi attempts the modified Temple of Fire Sage Mode but struggles with its mental prerequisites.
- His anxiety and hunger for strength prevent him from reaching the calm state needed to begin cultivation. 262
- Kazuya develops the Trouble-Dispelling Technique, a genjutsu intended to quiet Kakashi’s mind. 264
- With the genjutsu’s power adjusted, Kakashi successfully enters the introductory stage of Sage Mode. 264
- Later credits Sage Mode cultivation and his own exclusive ninjutsu with a major increase in strength. 275
Restraint and Battlefield Control
Kakashi can neutralize weaker opponents rapidly when given a clear objective.
- Binds multiple surviving white creatures in moments, leaving them unable to resist. 245
- Works with Minato, Obito, and Rin as part of a coordinated squad and follows Minato’s secrecy orders after their encounter with Madara. 208 250

Story Role / Major Arcs

During Minato’s team assessment, Kakashi takes the close-range role while Kazuya provides archery support. Their combined attack nearly catches Minato with a prepared arrow ambush, teaching Kakashi the importance of information and preparation. 19 20
Land of Artisans Mission
Kakashi accompanies Minato and Kazuya to the Land of Artisans. When the mission escalates into a confrontation involving multiple enemy jōnin, Minato and Kazuya leave Kakashi behind for his safety. The decision makes Kakashi feel powerless and strengthens his determination to train harder. 30 31
Growth under Kazuya
After Kazuya’s promotion, Kakashi repeatedly seeks him out for sparring and instruction. Kazuya teaches him the Life Breath Technique, recommends a Lightning Style Nintaijutsu path, and later helps him overcome the mental barrier blocking Sage Mode cultivation. 104 105 264
Minato’s Squad
Minato’s Squad is formally formed with Kakashi, Obito, and Rin. Kakashi serves as its aloof but capable member, while Rin frequently mediates between him and Obito. 208

Third Shinobi World War
Having learned Flying Thunder God and developed Sage Mode, Kakashi heads toward the front with Minato. He expresses confidence in his growth but remains aware of the overwhelming gap between himself and enemies such as Madara. 275
Parallel-World Encounter
