Background

Demon Heavenly Court

The original Heavenly Court was founded by Di Jun and Tai Yi after they united the Demon Race. It waged campaigns against Innate God-Demons, exotic species, and powerful independent cultivators, collecting wisp-like Primordial Spirit imprints in the Ten Thousand Demons Banner to expand its control. It also intended to appoint three hundred and sixty Demon Gods over the Primordial Stars. 44

At its height, the Demon Heavenly Court possessed seven to eight hundred Grand Unity Golden Immortal Demon Gods and tens of thousands of Taiyi Golden Immortal Great Demons. Di Jun and Tai Yi's imperial bearing was strengthened by the Court's Fortune Aura and by the Heavenly Rules they promulgated. 58

The Court monopolized the Primordial Stars Domain, moving much of the Demon Race into the Nine Heavens and restricting other beings' access to solar, lunar, and stellar essence. This policy fueled hostility with the Witch Clan and intensified the Witch-Demon conflict. 65

Under Qingyuan's advice, Di Jun formally adopted three policies: Heavenly Marriage, Heavenly Rules, and study of the Martial Path. The Heavenly Rules brought Merit from the Heavenly Dao, but the Demon Race's rejection of the Martial Path revealed its contempt for humanity. 127 The era ended when the Witch Clan summoned Pangu's True Body, devastating the Demon army and leaving the Heavenly Realm in ruins. 127 244

Reconstruction under Haotian

After the Witch-Demon Tribulation, Hongjun proposed rebuilding the Heavenly Court to restore order to the fractured Primordial Wilderness. He appointed his attendant Haotian as Lord of the Heavenly Court and Yaochi as ruler of Heaven's female immortals. 243 244

The new rulers inherited a devastated Nine Heavens filled with dangerous remnants of the final war. Haotian and Yaochi lacked the cultivation to clear the ruins themselves, had no officials, and could not attract volunteers with their initial recruitment efforts. 245 249 250

Haotian's position changed after he gained the backing of Yuan Qing. He imposed the Severance of the Ways, using the Heavenly Veil to isolate the Heavenly Realm, redirect celestial resources toward it, and establish a new cycle of time, seasons, and heavenly bodies. 274 278 279

Haotian's Consolidation

Haotian's conflict with Yaochi Golden Mother ended in her destruction. He erased her True Spirit, purged her faction from the Heavenly Court, and used the crisis to consolidate control over the Lingxiao Treasure Hall. 572

He then established the Eye of Heavenly Punishment, Heavenly Punishment Thunder, the Immortal Ascension Tribulation, and the Three Calamities and Five Tribulations. These measures tied punishment to violations of Heavenly Rules and accumulated Karmic Power. 569 572

Qingyuan later granted Haotian the Heavenly Emperor Infinite Seal, Qiankun Brush, and Myriad Immortals Scroll. These treasures transformed the Court from a title-dependent institution into an office-based system capable of granting cultivation, divine abilities, and Fortune Aura to registered officials. 584

Jade Emperor Era

Haotian eventually abdicated in favor of Zhang Bairen, who became the Jade Emperor. 1334 The succession did not erase Haotian's influence: as former Heavenly Emperor, he still intervened to defend the Jade Emperor's dignity and forced the Dragon Clan to offer tribute and Incense Power after Ao Lie insulted the throne. 1351

The Jade Emperor inherits a powerful but internally divided institution. Yang Jian ignores repeated summonses, the Imperial Guard initially obeys Curtain Rolling rather than the throne, and Taibai Golden Star possesses the Nine-Dragon Whip—an artifact with authority to punish or even depose an unworthy Heavenly Emperor. 1338 1341 1352
