History

During the Chūnin Exam, Orochimaru confronts Sasuke, Naruto and Sakura in the Forest of Death. Sasuke initially tries to surrender their scroll, but Naruto challenges him to fight. Orochimaru leaves Sasuke with a Curse Mark 424. Despite its pain, Sasuke refuses to withdraw from the preliminaries and defeats Er Hei 427 428.

Sasuke faces Gaara in the finals, using speed and Chidori to pierce his Sand Shield 441. He pursues Gaara into the forest, where a third use of Chidori exhausts his chakra and leaves him unable to move. Naruto and Sakura arrive before Gaara can finish him 450.

Afterward, Sasuke becomes increasingly troubled by his brother Itachi's words and Naruto's growing strength 480. He challenges Naruto on the hospital roof; Kakashi stops their Chidori–Rasengan clash and later urges Sasuke not to use his power against comrades or for revenge 481 482. The Sound Four then offer Sasuke greater power through Orochimaru. He chooses to leave Konoha despite Sakura's plea 484 485.

Sasuke fights Naruto during the retrieval attempt and escapes to Orochimaru 507. When Team Kakashi finds him roughly three years later, he refuses to return, attacks Naruto and Yamato, and is defeated by Leiyin. Orochimaru takes him away before the team can bring him back 557 558 559.

Personality

Sasuke seeks strength to avenge his clan and regards Itachi as the target of his revenge 456 557. He is eager to test himself against strong opponents, even while the Curse Mark is causing him pain 427. Itachi's dismissal and Naruto's progress deepen his resentment; by their later reunion, Sasuke speaks coldly to his former teammates and rejects their attempt to bring him home 480 482 557.

Abilities & Skills

Sharingan and taijutsu

• Uses the Sharingan in combat; his eyes display three tomoe during his forest fight with Gaara and again when he confronts Yamato 450 557.
• Develops speed sufficient to get behind Gaara's sand defenses and strike him 441.
• Uses Lion Dance against Er Hei and the Sound Four. Rock Lee recognizes it as a technique Sasuke copied from him 427 428 484.

Lightning Style

• Chidori pierces Gaara's Sand Shield and injures his shoulder. Kakashi warns that, at that point, Sasuke can use it only twice a day; a third use in the forest nearly exhausts him 441 450.
• Chidoryū sends lightning across his body, breaking Yamato's Wood Release restraint 557.
