Awakening

Children undergo Martial Soul Awakening at age six, regardless of wealth or status. In Nuoding City, the ceremony is administered by Martial Soul Hall official Su Yuntao through a hexagonal formation. The formation’s energy stimulates the child’s latent Martial Soul, causing it to manifest. 1 2

A blue crystal ball is then used to test the awakened child’s Soul Power. A Martial Soul without Soul Power cannot be cultivated into a Soul Master under conventional practice. 2

Zhang Bufan’s awakening broke the hall’s barrier and manifested as a small bronze cauldron. The testing crystal exploded under his Soul Power, registering only as “???” level. 2

Known Forms

Soul Power, Soul Rings, and Soul Skills

• Soul Power is the energy wielded through a Martial Soul. Its amount traditionally determines a Soul Master’s cultivation level and capacity for sustained combat. 1 119
• Soul Rings conventionally provide Soul Skills and increase a Soul Master’s capabilities. Absorbing a ring from a Soul Beast normally requires overcoming its immense energy and lingering will. 32

Self-Condensed Soul Rings

Zhang Bufan demonstrated that a Soul Ring need not always be hunted from a Soul Beast. Upon reaching Level 90, he condensed a ninth Soul Ring from his Chaos Soul Power and Heaven-and-Earth Energy. The resulting Chaos-colored ring was described by him as equivalent to a Million-Year Soul Ring. 222 223

The ring granted two documented abilities:

• Chaos Domain — Creates a domain in which Zhang can alter Rules to a limited extent, including weakening enemy Soul Skills, enhancing allied effects, altering gravity, distorting light, and changing material properties temporarily. Martial Soul Science

Bufan Academy’s teachings challenge the conventional understanding that Martial Souls, Soul Rings, and fixed Soul Skills are the only path to power.

Li Qingfeng’s theory describes a Martial Soul as an “interface” or mark within the soul that connects a Soul Master to omnipresent Heaven-and-Earth Elemental Energy or Rule Energy. Soul Power is the usable form of that energy after conversion through the Martial Soul. 108

Zhang Bufan further teaches that:

• A Martial Soul is a specific method for applying Soul Power to the world. 118
